Lot 1298
1891. NGC graded MS-66. A boldly struck gem with brilliant untoned frosty surfaces throuhout. Both sides display ample sharpness and shimmering luster under a light, the silvery color is very alluring. There is almost no correlation between mintage and high grade when it comes to most Seated Liberty half dollars. Despite a comparatively normal production of exactly 200,000 pieces, even a Choice Mint State representative can be difficult to locate and the quantity of Gems extant probably number fewer than three or four dozen, some of which have been graded by a third-party service, others "out there" hiding in old-time collections. This is one of the handsomest 1891 half dollars to be had! Pop 11; 4 finer with 2 in 66+, 2 in 67.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1311
1892. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with even toning. Each side displays lovely color that is boosted by frosted mint luster; undiminished, it shimmers under reflected light. Sharply defined throughout, as are most P-mint 1892 halves, there are no obvious areas of weakness on this Gem coin.

The basic obverse design of the Barber silver coinage consisted of a Liberty head with a cap and wreath. This figure was inspired both by classical Greek and Roman models and by the designs of various 19th-century French coinage. The word "LIBERTY" appeared on the headband in incuse; since it wears relatively quickly in circulation, it is often used by numismatists to help determine the condition of circulated coins. The Liberty head is flanked by six stars on the left and seven on the right, and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears above it. The date is centered below the figure. Pop 91; 54 finer (PCGS # 6461) .

Lot 1314
1893-S. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. CAC Approved.Toning here and there. Nice reflective surfaces. Barber Halves were minted from 1892 to 1915. Barber halves largely went into circulation and stayed there, and most of the dates are available mainly in low grades.

The series contains a number of scarcer issues, mainly struck at the San Francisco Mint. In the instance of 1893-S only a few high-end pieces like this MS64 make it to market each year. An exciting example of a sharply made issue, this coin displaying dappled lavender and russet-gray color. Pop 15; 6 finer (PCGS # 6467) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1895. NGC graded Proof 68. Star CAC Approved. Magnificent rainbow toning on both sides. A Monster Coin! Only 880 struck. This is a magnificent Proof striking, and it is a coin that has been preserved in essentially "as struck" condition since the year someone purchased it from the Mint. There are no hairlines on either side. The fields are deeply and unfathomably mirrored with pleasing mint frost over the devices, which yields a noticeable cameo contrast. The obverse is deeply toned with an oval of spot-light white off to one side, while the reverse is more uniformly toned in shades of purple and blue; there is also a significant presence of iridescence intermixed with the patina. A coin of importance and visually stunning. Pop 2; none finer.

1896. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo CAC Approved. A gorgeous creamy-white gem specimen. Only 762 struck. This date is always available in lower Proof grades, but for obvious reasons, Superb quality examples (and finer) are not generally found nowadays. We now we offer one of the finest cameo Proof certified 1896 Barber Halves by either of the major services. The fields are deeply mirrored. They sparkle with mirrored luster, while over the devices one sees satiny cameo frost, which gives the coin its sharp two-toned manifestation. Pop 3; none finer (PCGS # 86543) .

Lot 1318
1897. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo CAC Approved. A superb glittering white gem. Only 731 minted. An incredibly beautiful Barber half dollar! The heavily frosted motifs seemingly float in a sea of deep, nearly black molten silver. Full silvery radiance gathers on the design high points, focusing the viewer's attention on the sedate yet intricate beauty of Barber's Liberty. Of the 731 Proofs of the date struck, the present impeccable gem is placed with only a few others as among the finest surviving specimens -- it certainly has our vote in this regard! Indeed, PCGS has been extra careful with the date at the currently assigned grade, never has it assigned a finer numerical specimen within the Proof designation. If the everyday, somewhat over-used word "wonderful" was ever proper in its truest context, the present gem Proof Barber half dollar will, indeed, a coin worthy of that appellation. Pop 4; 4 finer in 68*.
