Lot 257
1803 C-3 R2. VF-35 Plus. Ten points sharper but there are traces of extremely fine roughness near the dentils before the portrait, a very fine scratch in the field behind the head, and an arc of lightly impressed dentils on the cheek. The reverse is void of defects, nearly choice. Frosty chocolate brown with slightly lighter toning on the devices and satiny luster in protected areas of the reverse. MDS, Manley state 3.0, with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CW.
Estimated Value $750 - 950.

Lot 259
1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin. EF-45. Frosty medium brown with chocolate brown toning on the highpoints and traces of lustrous tan peeking through in protected areas. A small spot of darker chocolate toning in the field under the hair ribbon and a small rim nick at the Y in LIBERTY are the best identifying marks, but neither is at all distracting. Late die state, Manley state 11.0, Braig 8.0, with extensive cud breaks around the reverse legend. The Spiked Chin feature is clear. Removed from an ANACS slab graded AU55 (ANACS label included, and it shows the attribution).
Estimated Value $600 - 800.

1804 C-9 R2. AU-55. Frosty medium brown with darker steel brown highpoints and lustrous tan in protected areas, especially on the reverse. 1804 C-9 R2. EF-40. Glossy chocolate brown with frosty luster showing in protected areas. Close to EF45 but there are a few tiny contact marks scattered over the obverse, including a small nick hidden in the hair above the ear. Sharply struck E-MDS, Manley state 2.0.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.

Lot 263
1804 C-12 R2 Stemless Wreath. AU-55. Lustrous medium brown and darker chocolate. A faint hairline scratch on the neck below the ear, a tick under the left foot of the N in CENT, and a shallow planchet flake at the dentils over the first S in STATES (as struck) are the best identifying marks, and they are trivial. Very close to mint state. MDS. The stemless wreath feature is bold.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.

Lot 264
1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems Double Struck. VG-10 Plus. The obverse is very slightly better while the reverse is a bit weaker. Frosty olive and steel. No defects other than a few trivial contact marks, none notable. This piece was double struck, and both strikes were centered on the planchet. The second impression was rotated about 15 degrees clockwise relative to the first. Evidence of the double strike is boldly displayed on the portrait from the top of the head down to the throat. The reverse, however, does not show any trace of doubling as this side apparently was struck against a new blank planchet creating a reverse brockage impression on the second planchet. MDS, Manley state 2.0. A clean, attractive example of this type of mint error.
Estimated Value $300 - 500.

Lot 265
1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems Triple Struck. VG-10. Glossy chocolate brown. The only notable defect is a shallow planchet lamination in the field near the dentils left of the lowest curl. This piece was struck at least 3 times, but the offset between these impressions was no more than a half millimeter. However, clear, sharp evidence of the multiple impressions is visible on nearly every detail on both sides. EDS, Manley state 1.0.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.

1805 C-2 R5 Small 5 with Stems Fine-. Fine-12 Plus. Sharpness VF20 or slightly better and choice except for several fine pinscratches in the hair with a couple extending into the field behind the head. Otherwise this piece is outstanding and would be a contender for finest known honors. Glossy chocolate and steel with frosty luster showing in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. Everything is boldly struck except for HALF CENT, which is always relatively weak. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.

Lot 267
1805 C-3 R4 Small 5 with Stems. VF-20. Sharper by 10 points but there is a small dig very well hidden in the hair at the top of the ear and 5 more on the reverse. The reverse marks are located in relatively inconspicuous places with 3 at UN in UNITED, one in the leaves under the first T in STATES, and the fifth nestled between the ribbon and leaf under the T in CENT. The three marks at UN are the most obvious ones in the group. Otherwise this piece would be choice and positioned very high in the condition census for this tough "Redbook" variety. Frosty steel and chocolate brown. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The swelling in the field before the portrait is strong and the reverse rotated 15 degrees CW.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.

Nicely struck S, Manley state 2.0. Struck very slightly off center to K-9 but the legends remain on the planchet. An attractive, problem-free example of this popular "Redbook" variety.

Lot 270
1806 C-4 R1 Large 6. AU-55. Lustrous chocolate brown with lighter brown in protected areas and hints of light bluish steel overtone. There is a small swipe of darker olive toning in the field over the hair ribbon and another at ITE in UNITED, and both of these darker areas show microscopic traces of very fine verdigris dusted onto the stain. Otherwise just a few trivial ticks on the neck and bust from mint state. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW and the repunching on the 6 is sharp. Most likely a piece from the hoard of mint state examples disbursed by the Chapman brothers beginning in 1906.
Estimated Value $750 - 950.

Lot 271
1807 C-1 R1. VF-20. Attractive glossy chocolate brown. No roughness or verdigris and only trivial contact marks, none notable. A nick very well hidden between the nostril and upper lip is the best identifying mark, but it's only visible with the aid of a glass. Rare EDS, Manley state 1.0. The repunching on the 7 is sharp.
