Early Imperial Roman Marble Torso of a Heroic Male Youth, Likely Dionysos or Apollo. A powerfully modeled fragment of an early Imperial Roman marble torso is exemplary of the highest quality of carving and technical expertise of the 1st Century AD. This aesthetic Rome adapted after conquering the Greeks and the Mediterranean world from the middle of the Third Century BC to the First Century BC. When Greek states were sacked, artistic treasures were brought back to Rome as trophies. Because of the demand, Greek sculptures emigrated to help meet the demand, founded Neo-Attic schools where these aesthetic traditions were further developed.

This particular sculpture most closely associated with a type developed by Praxiteles in the middle of the 4th Century to test the limits of realistic representation and explore human form. To that end, the taste of the era for ideal muscular youths in sculpture was quickly popularized, the subjects of Apollo or Dionysos becoming immensely desirable.

The impression of this carved statue is one of strength and power. Patinated to a variety of warm ivory tones by centuries of burial, the original surface of the marble has survived, providing an opportunity to observe just how skilled the finest of the Imperial sculptors were. The technical expertise in interpreting the god's muscles is quite impressive that one can sense the bones beneath the flesh at the joints.

The scale is slightly smaller than life-size. Torso measures 14" in height (standing 18 inches on its museum quality custom base) 18" wide and 9" in depth. Weight is 110 pounds. On his shoulders are remnants of the leather straps likely from the diadem around his head. In magnificent relic condition, this is an exceptional ancient piece worthy of any level of collection.

Five page documentation and certificate of authenticity from Antiquarium Ltd. July 1998 plus 12 additional pages of background information.

Striking Roman Marble Likely the Mythological Satyr Marsyas from 1st Century AD. Beautiful partial marble torso likely of the Phrygian Satyr, Marsyas, connected with the earliest period of Greek/Roman music. Marsyas found the first flute that was thrown away by the goddess Athena who "did not care for the bloating of the cheeks" while playing. Marsyas however became so adept at the flute, he challenged the god Apollo to a musical contest. Marsyas lost because he couldn't play the flute upside down so Apollo had him tied to a tree and brutally flayed alive. Somewhere a lesson in hubris is buried in all that terror. As frequently portrayed in art, Marsyas has a muscular torso and a bit of a tail on his lower back as seen in this work. 16 x 12 x 8" and weighing 80-90 pounds.

Roman Marble Head, Late 1st Century A.D. Falvian Period Likely Vespasian. The Flavian dynasty ruled the Roman Empire between AD 69 and 96, encompassing the reigns of Vespasian, and his two sons Titus and Domitian. This period is called the "Year of the Four Emperors". With Emperors Galba and Otho dying in rapid succession and Emperor Vitellius losing his position to Commander Vespasian, thus began the Flavian dynasty with Emperor Vespasian followed by his two sons 79-81 A.D. and Domitan 81-96 A.D. (his assassination).

Vepasian ruled for 10 years and is credited for rebuilding Rome (after the civil war that preceded him) financial reform and began the construction of the Flavian Amphitheater which Titus completed and now referred to as The Colosseum. Flavian's bust can be seen on gold aurei and in the countless busts and art through history, always with a full round face. This bust is consistent with that representation and exudes strength and resolve. The detached head has a smashed nose, very common with Roman heads toppling over due to earthquake, fire or war. However the details of the hair, eyes lips and ears are present and impressive.

In choice relic condition, this is remarkable piece and immensely appealing. 11.25 x 10 x 10" and the stand 6 x 10 x 10". Total height just shy of 18". Total weight of head 80-90 pounds.
