Draped Bust Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 186
1796 S-119 R3 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-61 Brown. CAC. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. The portrait and upper part of the wreath are covered with the usual tiny planchet chips that plague this variety, but the fields are smooth and the eye appeal is excellent. The notable marks are some darker toning in the dentils left of the L in LIBERTY and a spot of dark reddish olive toning nestled between the U and end of the wreath stem. This beautiful cent is almost certainly from the famous "Nichols Hoard" of mint state cents. (The "Nichols Hoard" is the name commonly applied to a group of cents, certainly several hundred and possibly as many as 1000, that were obtained directly from the US Mint in 1797 by Benjamin Goodhue, a member of the Continental Congress. These cents were passed down through his family until they ended up as the property of the Nichols family before being dispersed in the 1860's by David Nichols of Gallows Hill, Massachusetts. The hoard contained examples of the S-119 variety of 1796 and the S-123 and S-135 varieties of 1797.) LDS, Breen state III, with die cracks on the obverse and narrow rim cud breaks over TAT in STATES. Our grade is MS60. A great type or date coin. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 9 finer: 1 in 62, 5 in 63, 2 in 64, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 35870) Value $14,000 - UP

1797 S-120b R2 Reverse of 1796, Gripped Edge. PCGS graded AU-58. Glossy mix of olive and light brown with the light brown toning dominating the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are several wisps of darker reddish brown toning near the rims on the reverse, the largest of these at TATES-O. LDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks on both sides and minor swelling at UNITED. Graded MS60 net AU50 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #27741. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4 in his census. Our grade is AU50. A very nice example of the Gripped Edge version of the 1797 Reverse of 1796 variety. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 35900) Value $13,000 - UP

1797 S-135 R3. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with faint traces of very faded mint color showing through in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint luster, especially in the obverse fields, and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks, and you need a glass to see them, are three small spots of darker toning around the 79, another in the field close over the bust, and a planchet flake hidden in the leaves under the I in AMERICA (as struck). M-LDS, Breen state IV. The thin die defect over the C in AMERICA is clear and there is a very shallow low spot (caused by debris on the die) over the N in ONE. Another beautiful "Nichols Hoard" variety, and this cent is almost certainly from that famous group (see the description for the 1796 S-119 two lots earlier for a brief history of the hoard). Graded MS60 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #27841. Our grade is MS62+, very close to MS63. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 2 finer: 1 in 64+, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 35936) Value $15,000 - UP

1798 S-167 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair. PCGS graded AU-55. Frosty steel and chocolate brown. Satiny flowline luster covers both sides of this cent and it has mint state eye appeal in spite of a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a spot of lighter golden tan toning in the field below the lower end of the hair ribbon and a couple dull nicks well hidden on the bust tip. LDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks on both sides, a strong cud break connecting the first T in STATES to the rim, and thin rim cud breaks over NI and TE in UNITED (in the latest state the cud at TE extends to over the adjacent D). Noyes graded AU55 and tied for CC#4, his photo #21856. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#3 in his census. Our grade is AU55. A beautiful coin and a neat die state. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 4 finer in 58. (PCGS # 36071) Value $10,000 - UP
