Great Britain. Halfgroat, ND. S.2343. Henry VIII. Second coinage (1526-1544) Halfgroat. Canterbury mint. Archbishop Warham. Obverse; Crowned portrait of king right. Reverse; Tudor shield of arms W and A beside shield. CIVITAS CANTOR around. A pleasingly round coin with a strong portrait of Henry VIII aged around 35 years, without the familiar beard. PCGS graded VF-35. Estimate Value $275 - 325
* This coin was produced at the Canterbury mint under the auspices of Archbishop Warham. Born circa 1450, Warham was an influential office holder under Henry VIII and his father Henry VII. He was educated at Winchester and New College Oxford, and became Master of the Rolls in 1494. Henry VII found him a good diplomat, and he arranged the marriage of Henry's son Arthur to Catherine of Aragon. In 1504 he became Archbishop of Canterbury as well as Lord Chancellor, but he resigned the second post in 1515 and was succeeded by Wolsey. He assisted Henry VIII, but he was one of only a few dignitaries who also dared to challenge him. He died in 1532 and was buried in Canterbury Cathedral.

Great Britain. Crown, 1658/7. S.3226; ESC-10; Dav-3773. Oliver Cromwell. Obverse, draped laureate bust of Cromwell as Lord Protector left: OLIVAR DG P ANG SCO HIB & PRO. Reverse, crowned shield of arms with date above: PAX QVAERITVR BELLO around ('Peace is sought through war') The chilling edge inscription reads: HAS NISI PERITVRVS MIHI ADIMAT ('Let no-one remove these (letters) from me under penalty of death') in raised letters. A beautifully struck piece with a subtle blue pastel tone and prooflike surfaces, this specimen is in nearly mint state. PCGS graded AU-55. Estimate Value $8,000 - 9,000
* The Cromwell Crown is one of the most celebrated of English coins. After the death of King Charles I in early 1649 and the apparent end of the monarchy, Cromwell moved to assume the mantle of power. The Protectorate was established in December 1653 and the production of coins featuring the Lord Protector's portrait was authorised some 2 years later. There is no reason to believe that the handsome Cromwellian series of coins was not intended to circulate, although each denomination was produced in relatively small numbers. All were machine made and struck from dies prepared by the master engraver Thomas Simon (1618-1665) in the presses of the Frenchman Pierre Blondeau.

Great Britain. Tin Halfpenny, 1690. S.3448; Peck 570. William and Mary, 1689-1694. Obverse; Conjoined busts of joint monarchs. Copper plug in center. Reverse; Britannia left with shield and spear. Exergue plain. Dated edge reads NVMMORVM * FAMVLVS * 1690. Described by Peck as 'Extremely Rare' in any grade, this piece is practically as struck with much original tin color, and compares well with the finest specimens from the celebrated Nicholson halfpenny collection. Irreplaceable in today's market. PCGS graded AU-58. Estimate Value $1,800 - 2,000
* This in an exceptional example, from a relatively short lived tin coinage. Peck writes that .'although James II fled to France on 23 December 1688, William and Mary were not formally proclaimed joint sovereigns until 13 February 1689. Two days later the Mint was authorized to continue coining from the dies of James II. Whether this order also applied to the tin coinage is uncertain, but even if it did, it appears that none was struck, for no James II tin pieces dated 1688 are known., and it was not until 12 October 1689 that a fresh commission was granted to Charles Godolphin, James Hoare and Andrew Corbet for the coining of tin halfpennies and farthings at 21 pence to the pound (weight)'
The British public intensely disliked tin coinage. The soft nature of the metal meant that the coins were often poorly produced and deteriorated quickly. The issue of all tin coins was ended in 1692 and few have survived in the pristine condition of this piece.
