[San Francisco Earthquake, 1906] Diary of Jasper O'Farrell. 1906 leather diary of Jasper O'Farrell (1889-1953), whose grandfather, also named Jasper (1817-1875), was the first surveyor for San Francisco and designed the grand promenade that became today's Market Street; O'Farrell Street in San Francisco is named after him. On April 18, 1906, the 17-year-old young man, who was at the family ranch (in Sebastopol), wrote in part: "Was awakened by the dreadful shaking of the house & found that it was an earthquake. The house is an awful wreck. Everything is broken. House will have to be torn down. Left at 6:30 am and got to the city at 9 pm. Had to walk home from the ferry…Took a walk down town…and saw the St. Francis burning." The next morning he reported, "Took another walk down town at 2 am. Saw the Hopkins Institute & Mrs. Stanford's home catch on fire. The city is just one great big mass of flames…In the afternoon Tante & I left for the ranch & mother and John went over to Oakland." On May 2, he returned to San Francisco and wrote, "…The city looks awful. The people are cooking on the streets." Leaving the city, he travelled to Sacramento, Sutter's Fort, Stockton, Yosemite (where he and friends took long walks), Fresno, etc. Many blank pages; covers are tattered at edges but pages are intact.
Estimated Value $300 - 402.
