1831 N-11 R2 Medium Letters Reverse NGC graded MS63 Brown. Frosty golden tan with steel brown toning on the highpoints. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are a tiny spot of darker toning midway between stars 3 & 4 and another on the lower half of the 1 in the date. Although this cent offers mint state eye appeal, a glass reveals a touch of friction on the highpoints. TDS with a cud break at TES that fills the upper half of that S. Our grade is AU50+, very close to AU55. The attribution is shown on the NGC label.

Traces of faded mint color show in some of the protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a small diagonal nick under the front edge of the eye and a faint diagonal wisp of slightly darker toning across the right base of the N in ONE. LDS with a rim cud break that extends inside the dentil tips at star 6. Our grade is MS60+, nearly choice.

1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Small Letters. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Mellowed red fading to steel brown, about half the planchet showing some of the faded mint color. There are a few small spots of darker steel brown toning, including one at the dentils under the 3 in the date and another under the first S in STATES. A glass reveals a few tiny contact marks, including a thin vertical nick on the jawline and a very light diagonal nick in the field off the chin. MDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields on both sides. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21743. Bland says MS70- and CC#1. Our grade is MS63. Regardless of the census list used, this piece is one of the very finest known of the PHC/SL "Redbook" type, which is only available with this N-5 die variety. PCGS population 3; none finer at PCGS for the variety. None finer in RB at NGC as well. An important piece for a top-notch "Redbook" registry set (PCGS # 37145) .

1838 N-16 R5- AU50. A frosty mint state cent that is covered with attractive satiny luster, but there is a dull dent or planchet delamination on the bottom edge of the fold of the wreath ribbon and on the rim below plus a smaller one on the rim over the E in AMERICA. Lustrous medium steel brown with very faded mint red showing through in protected areas on both sides. Newly discovered LDS with a well-defined rim cud break over the AM in AMERICA. Clearly in the condition census for this rare variety, the rarest of the year, and the only example known with the rim cud break. An important cent for the serious specialist.

1839 N-5 R2 Booby Head MS63+. Very attractive lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate faded down from mint color with lots of the mellowed mint color showing through in the fields and protected areas, especially on the reverse where the faded red is dominant. No spots or stains, only a few minor marks. These include a thin horizontal nick on the nose, a faint planchet lamination just below the 3 in the date, and a thin diagonal scuff over NE in ONE. MDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields. A beautiful cent, very close to MS64 in our opinion. Called MS65 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20938. Bland says MS65 and CC#3. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65BN (PCGS label #37237.65/13092006 included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66 for the variety at PCGS.

Looks perfect to the unaided eye. The best identifying mark is a speck of dark toning resting on top of the head just left of the inner hair bun. MDS. The bisecting die crack on the obverse is fine but complete and a clearly defined rim cud break shows from star 5.5 to star 6.5. A nice cent. Our grade is MS60+. The notable ones are a thin diagonal nick near the hair under star 7, a spot of dark toning in the dentils right of the date, and a spot of darker toning on the lower loop of the wreath ribbon. LDS, die state d (Reiver's old N-10 variety). The die lumps in the field at the lips and lowest curl are gone and a tiny lump has formed near the leaf right of the bottom of the E in ONE.   Pair of PCGS Slabbed Cents, 1851 & 1853. Includes 1851 N-19 R3 LDS PCGS graded XF45 (our grade VF35+), and 1853 N-18 R1 MDS (b) with the obverse misaligned to K-2 PCGS graded XF45 (our grade VF25). Both are attractive glossy brown and chocolate. The 1853 has the attribution and Holmes provenance on the PCGS label. Lot of 2 coins.
