Archive of 21 Vintage Original Covers from Pictorial News of the Day. All Large, Remarkable Images of WWII. Pictorial News of the Day was published Monday, Wednesday and Friday by the Dispatch Photo News Service, Inc. This was photojournalism at its finest most especially during WWII which brought the Great War home to millions of Americans. Some of the cover images proved to be historic brilliantly capturing life in wartime. There are 21 covers in this very well kept collection each cover measuring 17 x 14" with three having paper loss, nevertheless quite compelling images all housed in an oversized folio. Multi-Signed Photograph by Four (4) of the Doolittle Raiders who Flew in The Raid on Tokyo April 18, 1942. Excellent re-strike photo, 11 x 14" of one of the Doolittle Raiders taking off from the USS Hornet and signed by Edward Saylor, David Thatcher, Thomas Griffin and R.E. Cole. Cole has also signed a second piece, a restrike comic panel detailing Doolittle's raid on Tokyo. All four were flight crew members who survived one of the most daunting and heroic missions in WWII. (British Military History) Wolseley, Garnet, Viscount Wolseley ALS Referencing Service in the Coornassie Campaign in Africa (1833-1913) British Field Marshal who was much-decorated and served in the Crimean War, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and in the Khartoum campaign against the Madhi. He was Britain's leading military leader in the late 19th century and was the model for Gilbert and Sullivan's Modern Major General. Autograph Letter Signed "G. Wolseley", 3pp, 7¼x4½", April 11, 1874, to R.G. Pellet-Rigleye, thanking him for a flattering ode. He refers to his service in the Coornassie Campaign in Africa and speaks appreciatively of those who recognize the challenges of military service. Estimated Value $200 - 400

Fascinating Collection of Autographs, Letters, USO Documents, from 1814 to the Korean War with the Civil War and WWII Included. For collectors of Militaria, a fine collection of documents, letters, autographs and other ephemera.
1.) Military Appointment to the First Brigade and Fourth Division of the Militia of the State of Vermont. Dated, June 7th 1814.
2.) Two (2) Post-Civil War discharge papers July 16th 1865 and one in 1868 from Commonwealth of Massachusetts in particularly fine condition.
3.) Excellent Letter from "Camp Cuba" Jacksonville, Fla, July 13 1898 a soldier to his mother.
4.) Eddie Rickenbacker (1890–1973) American Fighter Pilot WWI, typed letter signed as President of Eastern Air Lines. Superb signature.
5.) Signed portrait photo by Frederick C. Sherman, Vice-Admiral US Navy, August 3rd, 1945
6.) Propaganda flyer entitled LAST WILL OF ADOLF HITLER and a flyer demanding Nikita Khruschev to "Go To Hell"
7.) Rare letter to President Franklin Roosevelt from Rear Admiral Y.S. Williams aboard the U.S.S. Charleston, Chatham Island 12/5/1937 with a copy of the reply by FDR obtained by request from F.D.R's collection. Great Piece.
8.) USO Campshow 1087 Tour of Korea Dec 1952 to Jan 1953 as organized by Lionel Asher of MGM Studios. Film stars who volunteered were Walter Pidgeon, Paul Douglas, Jan Sterling Bill Shirley, Keenan Wynn, Donna Lee Hickey and Lita Baron.

(French Military History) Joffre, Joseph --World War I Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces That Defeated the Germans at the Battle of the Marne (1852-1931) French general who served as Commander-in-Chief of French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. A personal Letter, in French, 1¼pp, 8¼x5¼". Signed "J. Joffrey" as Lieutenant Colonel, on Rèpubllique Française letterhead, Paris, Nov. 6,1891 To Mademoiselle Marie Meroux de Valois, regarding the dossier of M. Moraly and suggesting times she can pick it up. A stamped seal beside Joffrey's signature is for the "Commission d'Examen des Inventions Interessant les Armées de Terre & de Mer." (Napoleonic Wars) Anne-Jean-Marie-René Savary, Duc Rovigo & Louis-Alexandre Berthier--Two Important Napoleonic Officials. Letter Signed by Ann-Jean-Marie-René Savary, as the Duc de Rovigo (1774-1833), 3pp, 9x7", April 14, 1815, 2pp, in French. Written during Napoleon's 100 Days, after his escape from Elba, to M. Bellangêre regarding an order Bellangêre had given to his squadron and wanting to know Bellangêre's intentions regarding service to the Emperor. Savary was one of Napoleon's most stalwart defenders during the critical 100 Days. Savary had served in the Revolutionary Army in the 1790s and in many of Napoleon's battles during the Consulate and the Empire; he also succeeded Fouché in the Ministry of Police and later tried to accompany the deposed Emperor to St. Helena. A remarkable letter. With a Document Signed by Louis-Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815), as "Général en Chef," on Army of Italy letterhead, headquarters in Milan, 1p, 7½x8¾", dated 28 of nivôse, year 6 of the Republic (1797), in French. To Citoyen Ordonnateur (the Paymaster) referring to a law fixing the number of horses generals and majors should have, the cost, and reimbursement. Berthier was a French Revolutionary General, a Marshal of the Empire, twice Minister of War and later Napoleon's Chief of Staff. He died under mysterious circumstances just before the Battle of Waterloo. Estimated Value $400 - 600

(Prussian and German Military History) Helmuth Graf von Moltke -- ALS Re the Imperial Policy With Regard to the German Railway System (1800-1891) Prussian field marshal, regarded as one of the finest military minds of his generation. He was recognized for his strategic use of railroads in the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. Autograph Letter Signed, 13½x8¼, in German, on Chief of General Staff stationery, Berlin, Jan. 19, 1875, to The Members of the Wurtemburg Chamber of Representatives, addressing the need for an imperial policy with regard to the German railway system. He gently addresses the "main points of your Highness' most meritfull work" with flattery, then states his own viewpoint, in part: "From my viewpoint I would like to state that the special needs and claims of the Reich and overall German interests through the elaboration of basic principles for the German Railway System cannot be fulfilled in the Imperial Constitution…an Imperial Railroad Law is undoubtedly necessary…" A way must be found, "taking into account essential interests of the Reich as well as of the member states, which will…secure for the Reich and the national community the necessary influence and will protect both against partiality and mistakes. At the time of this letter, the German Empire was only four years old and Moltke was writing the official military history of the Franco-Prussian War. Estimated Value $400 - 600

(Prussian Military Hilitary) Gerhard Scharnhorst, Karl von Grolman, and Hermann von Boyen -- Reorganizers of the Prussian Army. Gerhard Scharnhorst (1755-1813) Noted Prussian general, responsible for the reformation of the professional army of Prussia into a modern national army modeled on the reforms of the French revolutionary army. Clausewitz was one of his followers. He died from wounds he received at the 1813 Battle of Lutzen Letter Signed, Oct. 12, 1813, 8¾x7½, in German.
Karl von Grolman (1777-1843) Prussian general who fought against Napoleon in numerous campaigns, including the War of Liberation and Waterloo; he even fought as a volunteer in the Peninsula Campaign. He was a close associate of Scharnhorst and influential in the reorganization of the Prussian army after the defeats of Jena and Auerstadt. Letter Signed, 1835, 13½x8¾, in German.
Hermann von Boyen (1771-1848) Prussian officer who fought at Auerstadt against Napoleon and later helped reorganize the Prussian army with Scharnnhorst. Autograph Letter Signed, 1815, 9x8, in German. At the time of the writing of this letter, he had been promoted to Major General and was War Minister to King Frederick William III. Estimated Value $400 - 600

(Prussian Military History) August Graf Neidhardt von Gneiseneau,- Commander of Troops Who Captured Napoleon (1760-1831) Highly-decorated Prussian Field Marshal who, as a young man, served alongside the English in the American Revolution, fought at Jena in 1806, in the War of Liberation, and alongside Scharnhorst, was instrumental in the reorganization of the Prussian army. He was Chief of Staff to von Blücher during the Waterloo Campaign and was commanding troops who captured Napoleon after the battle. His Chief of Staff in 1830 was von Clausewitz. Sims, Lieutenant-Commander William S. -- TLS Referencing President Roosevelt and Information Re Battleships and the Caliber of Their Guns (1858-1936) U.S. naval officer who served in the Spanish-American War and World War I. He was an important modernizer of the American Navy in the early 20th century and was president of the Naval War College. A confidential Typed Letter Signed "Wm. S. Sims" on Department of the Navy Bureau of Navigation stationery, 2pp, 10½x8", Washington, D.C. Oct. 30, 1906.To George Harvey, Editor of the North American Review, regarding confidential gunnery information in a controversial article by Captain Mahan "in which he arrives at certain conclusions, concerning the most advantageous size and speed of battleships and the caliber of their guns, that are diametrically opposed to those held by the great majority of naval officers of all countries. These opinions are nevertheless of considerable weight, on account of Captain Mahan's great reputation -- so much, so that I think President [Theodore] Roosevelt's convictions concerning large battleships were somewhat shaken thereby…" President Roosevelt has asked for Sims' opinion, as Inspector of Target Practice for the Navy, and Sims is submitting galley proofs (not present) of his "carefully prepared letter which is, I believe, regarded as entirely conclusive by all who have read it…" Fascinating content of particular interest as it references the work of Mahan. Fine. Bold pencilled notation of receipt at upper left. Estimated Value $400 - 600

US Military : Rare Halloween Cover Canceled on USS Pennsylvania, Operation Crossroads Atomic Bomb Test, Letter by LCDR "Bull" Tobin. Three fine pieces relating to US Military, Mid-20th Century
Typed letter signed by LCDR Frederick Joseph "Bull" Tobin (1892-1978) survivor of two airship disasters, Dirigible Shendoah (1925) where he rode the airship in the tail section when it crashed. Hindenburg (1937) Tobin found himself under the airship securing the mooring lines when it exploded with him and his crew being credited for saving some 35 lives.
Rare Halloween cover postmarked October 31, 1935 aboard the USS Pennsylvania. The ship later survived the attack on Pearl Harbor having been in dry dock. This is a remarkably rare piece and in this condition, a near miracle.
Advance postmark June 30, 1946 for the July 1, 1946 cover for the First Atomic Bomb Test at Bikini. A very scarce full color Fluegel cover in virtually mint condition. Estimated Value $200 - 400

Zapata, Emiliano -- War-date TLS With Military Content (1879-1919) Mexican revolutionary; one of the most important military and peasant leaders of the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. He instituted land reforms in Morelos (the Ayala Plan) and was the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo. Typed Letter Signed as Commander-in-Chief of the Mexican Republic Liberation Army, Headquarters in Cuernavaca, Apr. 28, 1916, 1p, 13½x8½. To Citizen Attorney Gregorio Zuñiga, Tlaltizapán, suggesting that of the corn Zuñiga ordered, he should give 30 loads to the bearers of the present delivery for the sustenance of the forces in the line of fire throughout the regions corresponding to this zone: "Recomiendo a usted que del maíz que compre, entregue a los portadores de la presente treinta cargas de dicho cereal que se destina para el sostenimiento de las fuerzas que ten en la linea de fuego por los sectores correspondientes a esta zona…" The signature is large and bold. 4.) Dozen vintage original matchbooks, USS Missouri (BB-63) Wardroom Mess, very fine condition
