Jefferson, Thomas -- Autograph Manuscript Signed -- Sent to Philip Mazzei (1743-1826) 3rd President of the United States; principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Autograph manuscript signed in the title, "Extract of a letter from James Madison to Th: Jefferson dated June 14. 1795. Orange," one page, 6¾ x 6½". The extract addresses the issue of a debt owed by Arnold Henry Dohrman, a Dutch-born, wealthy merchant who lived in Lisbon during the Revolution and who provided supplies and cared for shipwrecked American sailors, to Philip Mazzei, an Italian physician, merchant, and author who was a close friend and former neighbor of Jefferson's. Jefferson would write a letter as a private citizen to Mazzei on April 24, 1796, criticizing the Jay Treaty and American foreign policy. The letter was published without Jefferson's permission and thereafter was referred to as the "Mazzei letter"; it would haunt Jefferson for the rest of his career and sour his relationship with George Washington.

Spectacular framed presentation with images of Jefferson and Mazzei on either side of the manuscript. Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000

Camp Fire Girls - Rare, Original, Vintage Broadside From Their Earliest Days. Large broadside, 19 x 12". Printed in red on thin paper. Linen backed. From the earliest days of the Camp Fire Girls, a group started in 1910 in Thetford, Vermont, but formally organized in 1912. The group was formed after local girls found themselves left out of the community's 150th aniversary celebration, unlike the local Boy Scouts. Luther Halsey Gulick, M.D., and his wife Charlotte took up the young ladies' cause, creating a group similar to the Boy Scouts but calling it Camp Fire Girls. The First Festival celebrated the discovery of fire and was held in 1911, thus the "Repeated!" in the title of this broadside. This is definitely one of the earliest, separately-printed references, and perhaps the first broadside referring to the group. Great eye appeal! Estimated Value $250 - 500

Rare Original Publications: The Barbarities of the Rebels (Atrocities by Confederate Soldiers) and Reminiscences of General Braxton Bragg. "The Barbarities of the Rebels" by John Russell Bartlett Printed in 1863 which was a highly sensational and unfounded propaganda alleging atrocities by the Confederate soldiers including cruelty towards Union prisoners, the murder of slaves and cowardly conduct.
