Although there is a problem of chronology that has not been clearly sorted, Augustus advertised his birth sign as Capricorn. The capricorn was a half terrestrial, half marine being, and played a prominent role in Augustan propaganda, seen on several coin types as well as in other media. Here the capricorn with globe seems to signify Augustus' power over land and sea. The rudder and cornucopiae are terrestrial attributes of the goddess Bona Fortuna, reminding us of Augustus' role in bringing peace and good fortune to the Empire after the devastating civil wars of the 40s and 30s BC.For an enlightening discussion of Augustus' horoscope and it's use in imperial propaganda, see T. Barton, "Augustus and Capricorn: Astrological Polyvalency and Imperial Rhetoric," JRS 85, 1995, pp. 31-51.

Antonia was the younger daughter of Mark Antony and Octavia. In either 18 or 16 BC, she married Nero Claudius Drusus, to whom she bore three children: Germanicus, Livilla and Claudius. Although initially honored with the title of Augusta by her grandson, Caligula, she eventually fell out of favor with him, committing suicide in AD 37 possibly as a result. Her son Claudius reconfirmed the title on her posthumously in AD 41. RIC notes that the reverse of this type emphasizes Antonia "as the model for Claudius' Constantia and also as the priestess of Divus Augustus, from whom imperial auctoritas ultimately flowed."

For the first few years of Nero's reign while he was still a minor, his mother Agrippina enjoyed unparalleled supremacy, firmly dominating the young emperor. Her portrait and title ostentatiously adorn the early coin issues from the reign, some with her bust alone and others, such as on this handsome denarius, showing jugate busts of her son and herself. As Nero became older he strongly resented Agrippina's dominance over him and meddling, and by AD 59 things had deteriorated to such a state of affairs that he had her murdered. In hindsight this is perhaps not entirely surprising; even by ancient standards the actions of the imperial family at this time were considered vile. Suetonius even records that on the day of Nero's birth, "Many people at once made many direful predictions from his horoscope, and a remark of his father Domitius was also regarded as an omen; for while receiving the congratulations of his friends, he said that 'nothing that was not abominable and a public bane could be born of Agrippina and himself.'" (Seut. Nero vi).

The reverse legend proclaims that Nero "closed the doors of [the Temple of] Janus with the peace of the Roman people throughout the land and sea" while the reverse type illustrates the temple with its doors closed. Janus was the Roman god of beginnings and endings whose dual aspect was usually indicated by his depiction with two faces. The doors to his temple were traditionally opened to signify declarations of war and closed to indicate the end of hostilities. However, the vastness of the Roman empire and the numbers of enemies on its borders made it a very rare occasion when the doors of the Temple of Janus were closed. Nero's closure of the doors is usually associated with the successful campaigns of his general Cn. Domitius Corbulo in the East and the reassertion of Roman influence in Armenia on the border with the Parthian Empire. It is deeply ironic that in the year after Nero celebrated the closure of the doors of Janus the great and bloody Jewish Revolt broke out, showing that peace was indeed a rare commodity in the Roman Empire.

C. Julius Vindex, the senatorial governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, had always had it in for Nero. He had supported the emperor's mother Agrippina the Younger from the outset in her attempts to curb the excesses of the young emperor, but after her murder in AD 59, little remained to hold Nero's desires in check and repress the many flatterers who fanned them. For almost a decade, Vindex watched and stewed as Nero's reign became increasingly problematic until, at last, he had had enough and raised his province in revolt in March AD 68, on the anniversary of Agrippina's death. This was done easily enough since Gaul had been suffering from Nero's tax policies. In an attempt to put down the revolt, Nero ordered L. Verginius Rufus, the governor of Germania Superior, to march against Vindex - an action that ended in disaster for all of the Roman Empire. Fearing the might of the German legions, Vindex sought the support of S. Sulpicius Galba, the governor of Hispania Terraconensis, and recognized him as an emperor to rival Nero. Vindex and his forces were defeated by Rufus at the Battle of Vesontio in May. This technically ended the revolt in Gaul, but the death of Vindex could not stop the events that were now set in motion. Galba continued to claim the imperial title and gained increasing support until Nero committed suicide in June. With his death, the Rome entered the bloody period of civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors (AD 69). The present denarius was struck at Vienne (Vindebona) during the Revolt of Vindex, apparently before Galba came into play as a potential rival to Nero, since there is no reference to any emperor here. Instead the obverse features a generic image of Victory and the reverse features a wreath crowning, not a name of a claimant to the imperial purple, but rather the abbreviation S P Q R, naming the Senate and People of Rome. This perhaps suggests that Vindex had initially hoped for a return to republican principles before settling on a replacement for Nero.

Galba. Silver Denarius (3.45 g), AD 68-69. Rome. IMP SER GALBA AVG, bare head of Galba right. Reverse: S P Q R / OB / C S in three lines within oak-wreath. RIC 167; BN 76; BMC 34 corr. (bust); RSC 287. Wonderful bold portrait, delicately toned. Superb Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $3,000 - UP
Before becoming emperor, the elderly Galba, governor of Hispania Terraconensis, served many years as a capable administrator and military leader, having previously governed in Gaul, Germany, Africa and Spain, where he had earned a reputation for strictness and impartiality. Hearing that he was in disfavor with Nero and that he would soon be executed, he considered joining the revolt of the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, Gaius Julius Vindex, who had promised him his support in a bid for the throne. He hesitated, however, which was probably fateful as Vindex's revolt was quickly suppressed, the usurper committing suicide. The turmoil in Rome continued, and in June AD 68 the Praetorian Prefect, Nymphidius Sabinus, transferred his allegiance to Galba. Nero, deserted by the Praetorians, was declared a public enemy by the Senate and committed suicide. Galba promptly took the title of Caesar, raised a legion, and along with the governor of Lusitania, Marcus Salvius Otho, quickly marched on Rome where he was welcomed into the city. Galba's short reign was unpopular. Fearing conspiracy, he executed many senators and equites without trial, and he never paid the Praetorians the bonus promised in his name by prefect Nymphidius, scorning the idea that a soldier's loyalty could be bought. Additionally, the Rhine legions were hostile to him - they had expected to be rewarded for their loyalty to the throne by their actions in suppressing the revolt of Vindex, but instead were accused of impeding Galba's path to the throne. On January 1 AD 69, they refused to swear allegiance to the emperor and instead proclaimed their commander, Aulus Vitellius, emperor. With the Rhine legions in revolt, Galba made the fatal mistake of formally adopting Lucius Calpurnius Piso Licinianus as his successor, which had the effect of infuriating of his former supporter, Otho, who had hoped for the honor for himself. Otho plotted his revenge, and five days after Piso's adoption, Praetorian guardsmen in his pay brutally murdered both Galba and Piso.
