1851 N-37 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Very lustrous bluish steel and light olive with hints of very faded mint red in a few protected areas on both sides. A beautiful cent with no spots and only a few small contact marks. A small diagonal nick on the jaw, a tick on the diagonal of the N in CENT, and some extremely light and barely visible pinscratches around RICA are the only notable marks, and they are not distracting. MDS, die state b late. The diagonal die lines from the dentils at star 13 are nearly gone but some remain visible, and there is a clear lump on the left bottom of the T in CENT. Our grade is MS60 (but the eye appeal of this cent suggests a significantly higher grade), and CC#4 for the variety in the Grellman census. Only four mint state examples have been recorded. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 3 finer: 1 in 64+, 2 in 65. Estimated Value $700 - UP

1851 N-38 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Lustrous light steel brown with traces of mellowed mint red showing on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and it has excellent eye appeal, but a glass reveals many tiny ticks scattered over both sides. The only defects visible to the unaided eye are a shallow planchet flake in the dentils below star 13 (as struck) and a bit of darker toning (not carbon) in the curl left of the inner curl. MDS, die state a late. The points down from the bottom of the E & N in CENT are short and dull but still visible. Our grade is AU58+ thanks to the tiny ticks, but this cent has solid mint state eye appeal. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1851 N-39 R3 NGC graded MS66 Red & Brown. Highly lustrous bluish steel brown with 10% of the mint red showing on the obverse, 20% on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers the entire surface of this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is superb. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are a small spot of slightly darker toning at the bust tip, a light tick on the cheek, and two tiny planchet flakes on the rim above the D in UNITED (as struck). Nicely struck except for some weakness in the dentils on the right side of the obverse. E-MDS, die state a, with a small bar near the dentils above star 3 and very fine radial flowlines in the fields. The early points from the inner and main curls are still visible. A truly beautiful cent that offers exceptional eye appeal. Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65, and CC#1 by a small margin in the Grellman census. 1851 N-40 R6- PCGS XF Detail Altered Surface. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable contact marks are a few microscopic ticks visible only under magnification. A tick on the lower half of the Y in LIBERTY, another on the coronet over the left side of that E, and a thin nick close over the ribbon loop can help identify this cent. Not sure why the graders at PCGS see this as "Altered Surface" but the texture of the obverse die used for this variety is noticeably different from a "normal" die. The details on the portrait are always blunted and appear "altered" but they are not (same for the obverse of 1851 N-34 which used this die but mated with a different reverse). EDS, die state a early. Fine die lapping lines show in the fields on the reverse, clearest at ERICA, and the fields on that side are slightly reflective. This is the discovery coin for the die variety. That discovery was made by Bob Grellman in 1984 while attributing a large group of cents for Jack Robinson. The discovery was confirmed later that year by Jules Reiver. Our grade is VF35, tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $700 - UP

Lustrous slightly mellowed mint red fading to steel brown and light chocolate on the devices, about two-thirds of the planchet showing the faded mint color. The surfaces are nearly flawless and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The best identifying marks are a tiny tick on the coronet over the L, a barely visible planchet flake connecting the lower right point of star 13 to the dentils below, and a faint streak of slightly darker toning up to the right from the top of star 13. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The points from the neck are clear and the spike up from the top of the E in CENT is sharp. A very attractive example of this rare variety. 1851 N-44 R7 Both 1's Repunched PCGS graded AU Details Damaged. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy medium chocolate brown and olive with traces of lighter brown in protected areas on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, void of any spots, stains, or significant marks. There are some nicks on both sides including a diagonal one right of the nostril, a larger vertical nick under the chin, and a small one under the N in ONE. The "Damaged" assessment by PCGS must have been their reaction to the wavy fields on both sides, an effect called "Pillowed Dies" by Jack Wadlington. Only 7 examples are known and all show the same puffy look in the fields on both sides. Our speculation is the dies were not properly annealed before being placed into very limited service. The multiple repunchings on both of the 1's are strong and the fine die lines on both sides are sharp. After a very short production run with this defective N-44 die pair the obverse die was replaced with a new properly prepared die and at least one example was struck with the new die combination (the unique N-42). Then the puffy reverse die used for the N-44 and N-42 die marriages was replaced with a properly prepared obverse die and the resulting N-1 die variety was struck in large quantities. The N-44 die variety was discovered by Don Weathers and confirmed by Bob Grellman in 10/1991. The discovery coin is a holed net Fair-2 and since that discovery was publicized another 6 examples have been found. The current Grellman census is 40+, 40, 10, 7(2), 5, 2. One of the rarest die varieties in the entire 1840-1857 series of large cents, and certainly one of the strangest. Once you see one you will never forget the "Pillowed" appearance. Our grade is EF40, CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

1851 N-44 R7 Both 1's Repunched PCGS graded Good Details Damaged. Slightly glossy light olive and medium brown blending to light chocolate in protected areas. No spots, stains, or corrosion, but this cent was slightly flattened (perhaps to "fix" the puffy fields that characterize this extremely rare variety). Small nicks are scattered over both sides; a tiny rim nick at star 6 can help identify this cent. Repunching is still visible on both of the 1's and the strong die line down from between the curls over the 51 is clear, but most of the fine die lines seen on the preceding example are gone. This example was the fourth one discovered. Our grade is VG8 sharpness net G5 and CC#6 of the 7 examples known of the variety.
