1849 N-4 R1 PCGS graded MS62 Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive frosty medium brown and light olive with generous traces of mint red showing on the reverse. Just a few minor marks including a thin diagonal nick on the jawline near the earlobe and a tiny planchet flake left of the top of the O in ONE (as struck). M-LDS, die state c late. The die lines over UN are gone and the ones down from the main curl over the inner curl are weak. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#11 in the Grellman census. 1849 N-4 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with mint frost showing through in the fields and protected areas. There are dull nicks scattered over both sides, none notable, and a small splash of darker olive brown toning at the top of star 9. E-MDS, die state b. A fine die crack extends from the tip of the leaf under the second S in STATES through the center of the O in OF to the dentils over that F. What makes this cent special is the oversize planchet. A very limited number of this die variety were struck on a planchet that is not only heavier than the normal 168.0 grain standard but also have a diameter that is slightly larger than normal. This piece weighs 170.95 grains and the diameter is a full 28.0 millimeters. This is the second heaviest example known and the fourth finest among the "Fatboys" listed in the Grellman census. 1849 N-5 R4- PCGS graded AU55. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. There is dirt nestled into many of the protected areas, particularly on the reverse. The only notable defect is a small patch of corrosion and verdigris hidden in the dentils left of star 5 (although this may be a planchet flake filled with crud). A cent that really needs a proper bath. EDS, die state a, before any crumbling that connects leaves 24 & 25. Struck on a planchet with beveled edges (as usual on early strikes of the variety). 1849 N-7 R4 Repunched 18 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Glossy medium chocolate and steel brown with peeps of mint color showing on the reverse. There are a half dozen small spots of dark olive toning on the upper half of the obverse and a trio of dull contact marks in the field before the mouth and chin. The reverse is choice, virtually mark-free. EDS, die state a. The repunching at the tops o the 1 & 8 is sharp and the tops of the C & E in CENT are not joined by crumbling. Called MS60 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #55110. Our grade is AU55, tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. 1849 N-8 R2 Repunched 9 PCGS graded AU58. The so-called 9 over 8 Overdate. Frosty chocolate and medium olive brown. The only notable mark is a tiny scratch near the dentils at star 13, and this mark certainly does not catch your eye. M-LDS, die state c. The repunching at the right bottom of the 9 is barely visible and the die crack through the reverse legend is clear. Dull remnants of the earlier die lines at the dentils left of star 3 are still visible. The doubling on the reverse is clear (a real doubled die, not "machine doubling"). Our grade is EF45+. 1849 N-9 R4+ NGC graded MS63 Brown. Frosty medium steel brown. No defects but the surfaces are a bit dull from a thin layer of natural oxidation. Looks mint state but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are a speck of carbon or dirt nestled between two dentils under the end of the wreath ribbon and a pair of tiny rim bruises over the I in UNITED. LDS, die state f, with several small crumbles on the reverse including one on the bottom of the berry under the first S in STATES. No notable contact marks and just light friction on the highpoints, but there are numerous tiny planchet flakes scattered over the obverse. A shallow flake between the date and star 1 and another at the bust tip can help identify this cent. LDS, die state d. The added die line at the right top of the T in UNITED is sharp and the lump on top of the coronet extends to below the lower left point of star 6. Our grade is net EF40. The best identifying mark is a dull tick on star 2, and it takes a glass to find it. Terminal die state, die state g, with a series of rim cuds from the bottom of the reverse to over the U in UNITED. The cud breaks are strong. Our grade is AU55. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but third finest of the die state in the Grellman census. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and it is choice except for a small patch of very fine corrosion under ME in AMERICA. The only other mark is a faint diagonal hairline and light nick on the cheek. The only notable marks, and they are barely visible, are two tiny low spots close off the end of the nose and a small group of tiny vertical ticks in the field over the right side of star 3. M-LDS, die state c. The vertical line inside the triangle of the 4 is gone and there are fine die cracks on the reverse. The added die lines from the curl at star 13 are sharp. 1849 N-17 R4 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous olive brown and steel with 20% of the obverse and 70% of the reverse showing bright original mint red. Both dies were freshly lapped and fine die polishing lines cover the fields on both sides. The fields are slightly reflective thanks to the fresh die polishing. No spots or stains. The only marks are some faint ticks on the nose and cheek and some small nicks at ONE CENT. None of these marks is visible to the unaided eye and this cent has great eye appeal. MDS, die state c. The fine die lines right of the T in CENT are gone but the additional die crack at ICA has not formed. An impressive cent. Our grade is MS63+, CC#1 for the variety and the "reddest" example of the variety by a wide margin in the Grellman census.
