1847 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light olive and steel brown on the devices with half of the mellowed mint color remaining on both sides. This cent looks like a flawless gem, but a strong glass reveals very faint abrasions in the obverse fields, the strongest of these located left of star 11. Obviously these abrasions were not significant enough to deter the PCGS graders from giving this cent a choice RB grade. MDS, die state b. The fine repunching off the left end of the base of the 4 that is found in the earliest state of this variety has been polished off the die but the die line down to the right from the dentils left of star 7 remains clear. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31541. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census (but clearly one of the "reddest" examples known). The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3, none finer in RB. Estimated Value $1,500 - UP

1847 N-31 R5 "Large 7 over Small 7" PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Beautiful glossy uniform light to medium brown with frost in protected areas. Just a few trivial marks including a small spot of darker toning off the tip of the coronet, a small tick between the bust and star 1, and a dull nick on the coronet over the B. This cent has choice mint state eye appeal but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices (but not enough to keep the PCGS grading team from assigning a choice MS grade). LDS, die state d, with die cracks on the reverse. The repunching at the 47 is clear and the "Large 7 over Small 7" feature is obvious. A great example of this tough die variety.
