(1672-94) London Elephant Halfpenny. Thick planchet. . Breen-186. VF-35. Variety without diagonals in the center of the shield. Ten points sharper but there are very light rim bruises around both sides, none significant or distracting but too many to ignore. Otherwise this piece is very nice for the grade showing only traces of friction on the highpoints and microscopic planchet chips scattered about both sides. Attractive glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown in protected areas of the shield side, possibly lightly cleaned long ago but toned nicely now. Weight 227.5 grains.

(1722) Rosa Americana Twopence. . Breen 88. AU-55. Type that is undated and shows the motto on a label. Very little if any wear but there is a patch of roughness running from the cheek through the hair at the temple to the G left of the top of the head. Otherwise the surfaces are excellent, virtually flawless. Sharply struck, and the reverse shows strong doubling from a chatter strike. Frosty dark choclolate and olive brown with some frosty lighter brown in protected areas. The rough area on the obverse displays reddish chocolate toning. Weight 229.7 grains.

1723 Rosa Americana Penny. . Breen-121. NGC graded MS-61 Brown Crowned Rose Type. Variety without a stop after the date. Frosty dark olive brown with lustrous light golden toning in protected areas, especially on the obverse. No defects, only a splash of darker toning at ORG in GEORGIUS that can help identify this example. An attractive example of the crowned rose type.

1723 Rosa Americana Penny. . Breen-121. VG-8. Without stop following a large 3. Sharpness VF35 but corroded. No verdigris or contact marks, but the surfaces are quite uneven. Dark chocolate brown. The date and legends are readable, although parts are weak thanks to the roughness. Weight 104.4 grains.

1723 Wood's Hibernia Farthing. . Breen-169. NGC graded MS-62 Brown D:G:Rex First Prototype Variety. Medium brown and chocolate with splashes of darker olive brow on both sides. There are traces of microscopic roughness in the field above the head and before the face of the seated figure, but overall the surfaces and eye appeal are quite nice. Sharply struck. Breen calls this first protype version very rare.

1723 Wood's Hibernia Farthing. . Breen-169. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown D:G:Rex First Prototype Variety. Double St. Frosty light to medium steel brown with a half dozen tiny splashes of dark olive planchet slag on the right half of the obverse and a thin planchet fissure above the head, as struck. No contact marks or other defects. Sharply double struck with an offset between impressions of no more than 1 millimeter and the second impression slightly off center. The doubling is obvious on both sides, and the double struck feature of this piece is noted on the PCGS label. A rare type to begin with, but especially rare as a mint error.

1738 French Colonies Sou Marque Paris Mint. . Breen-390, Vlack-16 Rarity-1. PCGS graded MS-62. Frosty light silvery gray with a dusting of very fine carbon in protected areas of the obverse and golden overtones on the right side of the reverse. The surfaces are lustrous where not affected by the carbon dust, and the strike is sharp on both sides. No contact marks or other defects.

There is some natural planchet roughness in the centers and small patches of shallow verdigris scattered about both sides. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet fissure from the top of L in POPULI to the dentils over that I. Not perfect but sharply detailed and finest certified by NGC.

The only marks are a couple tiny pinpricks in the field above the head on the obverse. Nicely struck with smooth surfaces, free of corrosion or planchet flaws. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. PCGS population 13 at this grade with 74 finer.

1773 Virginia Halfpenny with Stop following S. . Breen-180. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Frosty medium steel brown with faded mint color covering the protected areas. A small spot of reddish chocolate brown toning in the field close behind the head is the only mark. Variety with 7 harpstrings. Most likely from the famous Colonel Mendes Cohen hoard dispersed between 1860 and 1929. PCGS population 62 at this grade with 6 finer.
