Excellent Egyptian Casque in Cartonnage, 3rd Century B.C. to 1st Century B.C. Rare Egyptian casque made of cartonnage from the 3rd-1st Century B.C. The Casque was basically armor for the head to sheath and protect the upper torso and head of a mummy. It was thought at the time the casque ensured that vital functions such as seeing, breathing and eating would be restored to the owner after death. Cartonnage is the term used in Egyptology and Papyrology for plastered layers of fibre or papyrus, flexible enough for moulding while wet against the irregular surfaces of the body especially the head.
This example, 12" tall is decorated with the hawk of Horus wearing a solar crown, 12 marching figures of Anubis in the the background and having a very realistic visage. Remarkable Collection of 31 Rare Ancient Assyrian Shell Ornaments Used on Horse Tack (Bridles & Reins) Almost All with Original Bronze Brads. An incredible trove of choice Assyrian horse trappings, in this case, 31 carved ornamental shell buttons that were affixed to the leather bridles and reins with bronze brads. These were likely the property of tribal leaders, royals and the elite. Over the centuries, the leather would deteriorate leaving these jewels in the ground, the brads oxidizing to their appealing green patina. There are examples of these trappings in museums including the Metropolitan Museum of art, but we could not locate any collection consisting of so many or as well matched. We also noted individual trappings can sell in excess of a $100 in choice condition as we have here. Of the 31 ornaments only 6 are without brads. Average sizes 22 x 26mm. Collection is worthy of the most discriminating collector or dealer. Estimated Value $1,200 - 2,000
