The obverse die is slightly misaligned to K-1.5, as usual for this variety. Graded EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#18 in the Noyes census, his photo #27857. Not really sure where he found a deduction. 1794 S-66 R5+ PCGS graded VG10. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth although there are a couple small pits or planchet chips on the reverse, notably under the T in UNITED and in the wreath left of the O in ONE. Otherwise there are just a few minor contact marks including a light rim bruise left of the lower curls and another off the end of the pole. The date is bold and the legends are strong. LDS, Breen state IV, with all the die cracks described by Breen. The "Split Pole" feature caused by a die crack is quite strong. A nice example of this rare variety in spite of the minor imperfections. Called VG10 net VG7 and tied for CC#12 in the Noyes census, his photo #26604. Bland says VG8 and tied for CC#7. Our grade is VG10+ sharpness net VG8. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 2 in 30, 1 in 35. PCGS #35657. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

1794 S-67 R3 Head of 1795 PCGS graded AU50. Frosty uniform medium brown. Nicely struck and attractive showing only light wear on the devices. The only marks are a dull scratch left of the L down into the cap, a minor planchet fissure or line of slag from the leaves over O in ONE down to the ribbon loops, and microscopic traces of planchet slag around the fraction (as struck, of course). MDS, Breen state III. The repunching on the 4 is still clear and die clashmarks show on the obverse. Our grade is VF35. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer: 1 in 58+, 1 in 64+. PCGS #35684. Estimated Value $3,000 - UP

Lot 54
1794 S-68 R5 Head of 1795 PCGS graded XF40. Glossy medium brown and light olive with darker olive and steel brown toning on the shoulder. There are traces of crud or very shallow verdigris in protected places around the shoulder plus a few more specks of similar stuff on the reverse, but the remainder of the planchet is smooth. The surfaces look choice to the unaided eye but a glass reveals very fine vertical hairline scratches in the field before the portrait. The only other notable mark is a thin planchet lamination at the dentils over the Y in LIBERTY (as struck). LDS, Breen state V, with a very strong bisecting die crack across the obverse. An impressive die state for a very rare variety. Graded VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #32990. Bland says VF30 and tied for CC#3 in his census. Our grade is VF30 sharpness net VF25. Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 45, 1 in 50, 1 in 58. PCGS #35687. Estimated Value $15,000 - UP

1794 S-69 R3 Head of 1795 PCGS graded XF40. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the devices. The surfaces are smooth and nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a tiny horizontal tick on the shoulder and a small spot of reddish brown toning at the right top of the D in UNITED. MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides. Nicely struck and well centered on the planchet. Graded EF40 net VF35 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #20356. Bland says VF35 and tied for CC#10. Our grade is VF30 Choice. A choice cent that comes with a great provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1794 S-70 R3+ Head of 1795 PCGS XF Detail Cleaned. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth, mint frost shows in protected areas, and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The toning looks original and we see no reason to believe this cent ever was "Cleaned" as claimed by PCGS. The only mark is an old scratch on the top of the cap. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state IV. The die crack at TY is strong reaching down into the cheek where it fades away, and the die clashmarks on the reverse are clear. Our grade is VF30. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35693. Estimated Value $3,500 - UP

1794 S-71 R2 Head of 1795 PCGS graded XF45+, CAC Approved. Choice frosty light to medium brown and tan with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. No spots or stains, and the surfaces are perfectly smooth. The only notable marks are a dull scratch down the nose and a thin horizontal nick on the neck at the throat. MDS, Breen state IV. There are some fine die cracks on the obverse and die clashmarks on both sides, but the crack down between the R & T in LIBERTY has not formed. The reverse is rotated about 30 degrees clockwise and misaligned a bit to K-3. Graded VF20 and tied for CC#22 in the Noyes census, his photo #59920. Our grade is VF25+, close to VF30. The attribution and Reiver provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer: 2 in 58, 2 in 61. PCGS #35696. Estimated Value $3,000 - UP

1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 PCGS graded AU50. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate. Traces of lighter brown and tan show in some of the protected areas and darker steel brown covers the highpoints. This cent looks perfectly smooth at first glance and the eye appeal is excellent, but there are tiny pits that contain greenish verdigris on both sides, the largest of these touching a leaf above the N in ONE. In addition there are two dull scrapes on the left side of the cap and another lighter one at the bottom of the cap. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state III early, with a die crack through the D in UNITED to the wreath but before the lump on the crack at TY to the hair. Graded EF45 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #85172. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is EF45+ sharpness net VF35. As attractive example of the "Exact Head of 1795" variety in spite of the defects. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 6 finer: 4 in 53, 1 in 55, 1 in 58. PCGS #35699. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

1794 NC-1 R7+ NGC graded G4. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. The planchet is covered with light corrosion on all but the highpoints. No verdigris and the only marks are two small chips or pits at RT in LIBERTY. The date is not strong but it is easily readable. The legends are reasonably clear except for weakness from ED in UNITED to the leaves under ER in AMERICA thanks to a dull wave in the die. This die apparently suffered a catastrophic failure very early, and all four of the known examples show either a wave or significant crack across the reverse. MDS, Breen state II. This is the plate coin in the Breen encyclopedia for his state I, but it is state II. Graded VG7 net AG3 by Noyes and tied for CC#2 among the 4 examples known, his photo #21713. Bland says net AG3 and tied for CC#2 as well. Our grade is net AG3. All 4 of the known examples have significant surfaces problems and are "scudzy" by EAC standards, so holding out for a nice one may not be a successful strategy. Comes with an impressive provenance. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the NGC label. The only example of the variety given a grade by either service. Estimated Value $8,000 - UP

1794 NC-9 R7+ PCGS Fine Detail Environmental Damage. Sharpness F12 or slightly better but covered with moderate corrosion on all but the highpoints, which are smooth and glossy. There are traces of shallow verdigris in some of the protected areas, but they are invisible to the unaided eye. The only marks are a light rim bruise at E in LIBERTY and another over AM in AMERICA. Partly glossy light chocolate brown blending to darker olive brown in protected areas. The date is weak but readable (weakness from corrosion, not wear), and the legends are complete except for ATES, which is very weak due to roughness. LDS, Breen state II late. The bisecting vertical die crack on the reverse is quite strong, much longer and stronger than the crack on the other three examples known of this variety. An uncracked example is unknown, and it is reasonable to assume the reverse die cracked during the initial strike or even during preparation. This "fatal" crack was responsible for the early demise of the reverse die and explains the extreme rarity of the variety. This is the discovery coin for the die variety and it is the latest die state known. The reverse is plated in the 1991 Noyes and 1979 Morley references on the cents of 1794. Called F12 net AG3 and CC#4 of only 4 examples known in the Noyes census, and all of those are in low grade with imperfect surfaces (photo #28762). Bland also says net AG3 and CC#4. Our grade is net AG3 as well. A great cent in spite of the low grade, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35675. Estimated Value $8,000 - UP
