Garfield, James A. -- Autograph Letter Signed One Day Before Being Elected President (1831-1881) 20th President of the United States (March 4, 1881-Sept. 19, 1881). Autograph letter signed "J.A. Garfield" the day before his election (election day in 1880 was November 2), one page, headed Mentor, Ohio, 10¼ x 8", Nov. 1, 1880. To J.P. McCaskey, a local education in Lancaster, Penn. In part: "The General Barnum to whom you refer as having been present at the business meeting of the Army of the Cumberland at Washington was not the General Barnum of Connecticut but General Barnum of New York. Accept my thanks for the newspaper article you were kind enough to send me." With holograph envelope. Letter is in very good condition; light soiling, tape reinforcement on verso, chip at lower edge, and some contemporary ink smears. Envelope is soiled, with election-day postmark from West Mentor, Ohio.

Garfield was a major general in the Civil War, but in 1862 left the Army to take a seat in Congress, where he served nine terms. He was and is the only sitting member of the House to serve as President. On July 2, 1881, he was shot by Charles Guiteau, a disturbed, disaffected office seeker. Garfield lingered until September 19, 1881. His assassin was hanged on June 30, 1882. Estimate $400 - 600

Harding" as President, on White House stationery, 1½ pages (1st and 4th pages of conjoined sheets), Washington, June 24, 1922. Overall toning; one small spot on first page; signature page has type transfer and ink brushing to "G" in signature. To Rollo Ogden, Editor of The New York Times. Harrison, William Henry -- Document Signed As Commanding Officer (1773-1841) Ninth President of the United States (1841); he died of pneumonia after serving only 31 days. Document signed "Wm H. Harrison" as Commanding Officer, one page, 9½ x 8", Fort Washington, Nov. 16, 1796. Harrison signs off on the "Return of Camp Equipage & Stationary wanting for use of Captain R Sparks on command to the Southard Fort Washington…." and orders the Quarter Master to issue supplies which include tents, kettles, axes, paper, quills, a box of wafers, inkpowder, orderly books, an inkstand, and knapsacks. Very good condition. Some show-through from glue remnants on verso; hole and/or small paper loss at top corners, affecting two words of text. Partly-printed document signed "Andrew Jackson" as President, one page, vellum, 9½ x 15½", Washington, Mar. 1, 1831. A grant of land in St. Louis containing ninety-six and eighty hundredths of an acre to Irvine O. Hockaday of Callaway County, Missouri. Countersigned by Land Commissioner Elijah Hayward. Seal at lower left is stained but intact. A lengthy endorsement by Hockaday as recorder for Callaway County is on verso. Jackson's bold signature measures 5½" across. Normal folds, else fine. Granting a quarter lot of land at Steubenville, "in the Territory north-west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river" to Horton Howard of Belmont County, Ohio. (Jefferson, Thomas) Portrait by Kosciuszko, Engraving by Sokolnicki. Bust portrait of Jefferson, right profile, wearing a laurel crown. Image: 6 1/8 x 5 1/8". Sheet: 13 x 11". Printed below the image: "Thomas Jefferson / A Philosepher [sic] a Patriote and a Friend / Dessiné par son Ami Tadée Kosciuszko. Et Gravé par Mt. Sokolnicki." Fine. General Tadeusz Kosciuszko was a Polish-born patriot who fought in the American Revolution. He and Thomas Jefferson became good friends when Kosciuszko returned to the United States in 1797. Kosciuszko was an amateur artist and he persuaded Jefferson to sit for a profile likeness. Kosciuszko took his watercolor portrait, now lost, to Paris, and had it engraved by Polish nobleman Michel Sokolnicki. Fine. Estimate $400 - 600

Kennedy, John F. -- TLS With Appreciation for Sympathy on the Loss of Their Son (1917-1963) 35th President of the United States (1961-Nov. 22, 1963, when he was assassinated). Typed letter signed "John Kennedy" as President, one page, on White House letterhead, 8¼ x 6½", Washington, Aug. 14, 1963. To Congressman Charles A. Vanik of Ohio: "Dear Charles [Congressman Vanik is marked through]: Mrs. Kennedy and I were deeply moved by your thoughtful remembrance on the loss of our son. Your kind expression of sympathy meant a great deal to us." Matted with a photo of JFK, Jackie, Caroline, and John John, and a Kennedy silver dollar and framed to an overall size of 17¼ x 21½". Fine condition.

Patrick Bouvier Kennedy was born five and a half weeks early, by caesarean section, on August 7, 1963, and died 39 hours later, on August 9, 1963. His death, which was caused by hyaline membrane disease (now called infant respiratory distress syndrome), spurred innovations in the treatment of premature infants, creating the pediatric subspecialty neonatology. Three and a half months after Patrick's death, John Kennedy would be assassinated in Dallas. Estimate $3,000 - 5,000

Kennedy, John F. -- Unsigned Notes to Pierre Salinger on the "Catholic Issue" (1917-1963) 35th President of the United States (1961-Nov. 22, 1963, when he was assassinated). Autograph notes to Pierre Salinger (1925-2004), who would serve as JFK's Press Secretary, totalling more than 120 words, on two sheets of 11 x 8½" paper, written in May 1960 during the presidential campaign. No Catholic had ever been elected President, so Kennedy's religion was a major issue. A few notes by Salinger are written in blue ink in the margins.

Notes include: "You will recall the Lawrence & DiSalle opposition in 1956 to a V.P." [JFK was almost nominated vice-president in 1956, losing narrowly to Estes Kefauver]. "It is just like the McKinney quote this morning - In 1956 they were saying it about the V.P….In Burns' book it quotes a conversation Adlai had with Sarge Shriver. Get the Burns book…Unfortunately - Look has an article on the Protestant view of a Catholic Pres. this week which is not very helpful ['A Protestant View of a Catholic for President' by Eugene Carson Blake and G. Bromley, published in Look Magazine May 10, 1960]…In addition Reston etc. [etc. is crossed out] [?] - etc. say is all my fault because of the 1956 memorandum [by Theodore Sorensen regarding JFK's chances in 1960]. They forget that in 1956 - every one including Adlai - raised objections & questions about a R][oman] C[atholic] V.P. - the memorandum…was in response to them." Fine condition.

Accompaning these notes is a note written by Pierre Salinger to Earl Mazo in October 1965 on a Continental Airlines memo engraved with Salinger's name (he was V.P. of Continental). The note says: "Cousin Earl -- I found them! See you in Washington in Dec. Pierre." Transmittal envelope, postmarked from Los Angeles, Oct. 20, '65, is present. Estimate $2,500 - 3,500

Lincoln, Abraham -- Autograph Note Signed Six Weeks Before His Assassination (1809-1865) 16th President of the United States (1861 until his assassination in April 1865). Autograph note signed "A. Lincoln" as President, 3 x 3", no place, March 1, 1865. Six weeks before he was assassinated, Lincoln wrote, "It is said that sentence in this case was fine & imprisonment until paid, & that the fine has been fully paid. If so, the disability is removed." Lincoln wrote on the verso of part of a letter which would have been a petition to dismiss the case to which he refers. Paper is toned, with faint file notes at top and bottom; note needs to be straightened in the frame. Boldly penned and signed. McKinley, William -- Typed Letter Signed as Republican Presidential Nominee (1843-1901) 25th President of the United States (1897-Sept. 15. 1901, six months into his second term). Typed letter signed "W McKinley" as the Republican presidential nominee, one page, on personal stationery, 8½ x 5½", Canton, Ohio, Ohio. A month after the Republican convention in St. Louis, where he was nominated on the first ballot, McKinley writes to General William C. Wallace, Judge Advocate General of New York, thanking him for his "cordial congratulations and tender of active support…." Light toning, else fine. Large, bold signature. William C. Wallace (1856 - 1901) served as a U.S. Representative from New York (1889-91) and was appointed judge advocate general on the staff of New York Governor Morton in 1894. Estimate $300 - 400

Nixon, Richard & Three Future Republican Presidents: Ford, Reagan, Bush + Members of Nixon's Cabinet & Family. Red cover with white letters for "Press Kit: Young Voters for the President" signed before and/or during the Republican National Convention held Aug. 21-23 in Miami Beach, Florida, where Nixon was nominated for re-election. Richard Nixon signed as President in the center. Three future Republican Presidents were present and signed: Gerald Ford, as House Minority Leader; Ronald Reagan, as Governor of California; and George H.W. Bush, as UN Ambassador. Among other prominent Convention attendees who signed were Cabinet members, presidential advisors, and White House staffers, including: Donald Rumsfeld, Henry Kissinger, Elliott Richardson, Robert Finch, Rogers C.B. Morton, Earl Butz, William & Jill Ruckelshaus, Richard Kleindienst, Jim Hodgson, George Romney, and William "Red" Blount. Other signers were CBS News' Charles Kuralt, Eastern Airlines head and ex-astronaut Frank Borman, and Washington Governor Tom Evans.

The Philippine Scouts was a military organization first organized by the US in 1901 to combat Philippine revolutionary forces. Roosevelt, Theodore -- Typed Letter Signed as Vice President (1858-1919) 26th President of the United States (1901-1909). Typed letter signed "Theodore Roosevelt" as Vice President, one page, on "The Vice President's Chamber" letterhead, Washington, April 3, 1901. Five and a half months before he would be thrust into the presidency by William McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt responds to Dr. H.L.K. Shaw, the son of the late Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, regarding how an anonymous $500 donation by a lady was spent to help needy veterans, some of them "colored." Roosevelt writes, in part: "…I meant the sum to be at the absolute discretion of your lamented father whose judgment I knew I could implicitly trust…for I felt that in more than one way he rendered very great service to the country." Typewritten text is light but Roosevelt's signature is bold. Matted with a small, bust engraving of Roosevelt and framed to an overall size of 20½ x 11¾". A carbon copy of Dr. Shaw's letter regarding the donation is present. Estimate $400 - 600

Taft, William H. -- Typed Letter Signed as Secretary of War (1857-1930) 27th President of the United States (1909-1913) and the tenth Chief Justice of the United States (1921-1930), the only person to have held both offices. He served as Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt from 1904-1908. Typed letter signed "Wm H Taft" as Secretary of War, one page, on War Department letterhead, 8¼ x 5½", Washington, Jan. 18, 1906. To Hon. Timothy L. Woodruff, who has requested a position as Marine Superintendent of Transports for a Captain Derby. Taft replies, "…I am advised by General Aleshire that the position of Marine Superintendent, which was held by Capt. W.E. Nye, deceased, at Newport News, Va., has been discontinued, as the services of a Marine Superintendent are no longer required at that place." Taylor, Zachary -- Bold Signature and Rank (1784-1850) 12th President of the United States. He served in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Second Seminole War, and the Mexican-American War. During the latter war, Taylor became a national hero after leading U.S. troops to victory at the critical battles of Monterey and Buena Vista. Exceptionally bold signature with sentiment and rank: "Very respectfully Sir / Your obt Servt / Z. Taylor Majr Genl / U.S. Army," written on a 2 x 4" piece of light blue paper affixed to a 3¼ x 6¼" sheet, no place, no date (c. 1846-48). Extremely fine. Estimate $1,500 - 2,000

Taylor, Zachary -- Letter Signed as Colonel Commanding (1784-1850) 12th President of the United States; he served from March 1849 until his death in July 1850.He spent 40 years in the Army, serving in the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars, and the Mexican-American War. It was his victories at Monterrey and Buena Vista that paved his way to the White House. Letter signed "Z. Taylor" as "Col Comd" during the Second Seminole War, one page, on lightly ruled paper, 9½ x 7½", Headquarters, 1st Brigade, Army South of the Withlacoochee [Suwanee], Fort Basinger (Fla.), Feb. 21, 1838. Shortly before he was promoted to Brigadier General, Taylor sends returns to Lt. Gen. Chambers at Head Qtrs Army of the South Fla. "Enclosed are the returns [not present] required by you with the exception of Co. "I" 2nd Arty. which will be forwarded as soon as recd. at this office.
