1794 S-17a R5- Head and Edge of 1793 PCGS graded VG10. Glossy olive brown and chocolate streaked with tan and light brown on the obverse. Lighter brown covers the protected areas on the reverse. There are four parallel very light planchet lamination streaks passing NW to SE on the obverse (as struck; a very common feature on this variety). The streak from the hair to the cheek is the only one that catches your eye. Otherwise the only marks are three very light rim bruises under the date. The reverse is choice. MDS, Breen state II early. The crack from the end of the pole is faint (if present at all), and the die clashmarks under TATES are clear. Struck with the obverse misaligned slightly to K-7.5 while the reverse is off a bit more to K-3.5. The date is bold and the legends are strong. The edge lettering is complete and deeply impressed. A very nice example of this tough Head of 1793 variety. Not seen by Noyes or Bland. Our grade is VG10. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1794 S-18a R6- Head and Edge of 1793 PCGS graded VF20. Glossy medium chocolate brown mottled with lighter brown and darker olive brown tones. The surfaces are mostly smooth and the eye appeal is excellent, but a glass reveals traces of extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas on both sides, particularly around the top two leaves of the wreath. A long, thin nick along the bottom edge of the jaw, a shallow rim dent over the L in LIBERTY, and another rim bruise at the U in UNITED are the notable contact marks. The date is complete and easily readable although it is not bold, and the legends on the reverse are strong. The edge lettering is bold and the downward pointing leaf following DOLLAR is strong (and completely visible in the holder). MDS, Breen state II. The reverse die has been repolished causing the right end of the wreath ribbon to be weak and indistinct. Graded F12 and tied for CC#3 honors in the Bland census. Noyes says VF20 net F12 and tied for CC#3, his photo #32992. The finest example is contained in the ANS Collection so the pool of nicer pieces available to collectors is quite shallow. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 2006 Noyes reference on the cents of 1793 and 1794, and the reverse is plated in the 1979 Tom Morley reference on the cents of 1794 (page 41, top row, where used to illustrate the VF grade for this reverse die). Our grade is F15+ sharpness net F12. One of only a very few of this variety that has passed muster for grading at PCGS. A great cent that comes with an impressive provenance. 1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 PCGS graded F12. Glossy light to medium brown with hints of reddish brown toning in some protected areas on the obverse. The highpoints of the devices are toned a darker shade of steel. The surfaces are smooth but there is a planchet flake hidden in the hair below the cap. A dull rim nick over the L and a dull diagonal scratch or nick right of T in CENT are the only notable signs of contact. The bottom of the date is a bit weak but everything else is clear. E-MDS, Breen state III, without any hint of a bulge in the field below the cap. Graded F12 net VG8 in the Noyes census, his photo #63128. Our grade is VG10. 1794 S-19a R5+ Head and Edge of 1793 PCGS Fine Detail Graffiti. Slightly glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints of the devices. The surfaces look smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals uniform extremely fine roughness covering both sides. No verdigris and the only marks are a few very light hairline scratches hidden in the toning on the obverse (not to be confused with "Graffiti") and a minor rim bruise right of the second S in STATES. The date is complete and easily readable and the legends are complete except for weakness at TATES OF due to the usual weaker strike in that area. The edge lettering is complete and strong (including the downward-pointing leaf following DOLLAR). MDS, Breen state II, with subtle bulges in the field below the cap. Graded F12 net VG7 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #32214. Del Bland says VG8 and tied for CC#10 in his census. Our grade is VG8. Comes with a very nice provenance. 1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793, Rev of 1794 PCGS graded F15. Slightly glossy light to medium steel brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are mostly smooth but a glass reveals traces of extremely fine roughness in a few protected areas, primarily on the upper part of the reverse. There are just a few light contact marks; the notable ones being a light rim bruise left of the date, another right of the second S in STATES, and a disjointed scratch in the leaves under TED. It appears this cent would benefit from a proper brushing to bring out the underlying gloss. E-MDS, Breen state II early, with two subtle vertical waves in the field under the cap, the left wave barely visible. Softly struck at BERTY and the opposing legend at ICA to the denominator, probably caused by dies not in proper axial alignment (die faces not perfectly parallel). Everything else is well struck and the date is strong. Graded F15 net VG10 by Noyes, his photo #34287. Bland says VF20 and tied for CC#11. Our grade is VF20 sharpness net F15. A nice mid-grade example of the popular Head of 1793 type, and the portrait is well defined. Comes with a very nice provenance that has been traced back more than a century. 1794 S-20 R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 PCGS Fine Detail Graffiti. Very attractive glossy light to medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are smooth and this cent has great eye appeal, especially for a Head of 1793 variety. The only notable marks are two faint hairline scratches hidden in the toning on the cap, a tiny rim bruise left of the lower curls, and a small rim nick just left of the fraction. The claim of "graffiti" made by the folks at PCGS seems out of line. The date is bold and the legends are complete and clear. The edge letters are complete and quite strong. MDS, Breen state II, with a very subtle wave in the field from the dentils to the chin. This example was discovered three years ago and has not been seen by Bland or Noyes. Our grade is F12. 1794 S-21 R3 PCGS graded AU55. Frosty light brown and tan with flowline luster covering the fields and protected areas on both sides. This cent has mint state eye appeal but there is a touch of friction on the highest points of the hair. The only mark is a mint-made planchet fissure from the right side of the E in ONE to the left top of the E in AMERICA. Otherwise this cent is absolutely choice. Sharply struck LDS, Breen state V. All the obverse die cracks and die clashmarks described by Breen are present. The reverse is uncracked, as always. The "die crack" from the N in CENT to the right loop in the ribbon bow is a clashmark, not a crack as described by Breen. Nicely centered on the planchet with clearly defined dentils around both sides. The obverse of this cent is plated on page 4 of the 1979 Morley reference on the cents of 1794 to illustrate the AU55 grade. Graded AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #25147. Bland says AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#6 in his census. Our grade is EF45+. 1794 S-22 R1 PCGS AU Detail Environmental Damage. Frosty light to medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter brown toning on the very highest points of the devices. This cent is sharply struck and there is very little friction on the highest points of the portrait, and the reverse looks mint state. However a glass reveals uniform extremely fine granularity mixed into the die flowlines. No spots or stains, and the only notable marks are a very light diagonal nick on the bust over the 4, a couple more on the cheek and neck, and a tiny pinprick over the end of the pole. These contact marks are "lost" in the die flowlines and do not catch your eye. LDS, Breen State VIII, with heavily flowlined fields on the obverse, a die crack up through the 4 and neck to the ear lobe, and shallow "Mounds" on the reverse. Looks better than the "Environmental Damage" assessment given by PCGS might imply. Not seen by Bland or Noyes. Our grade is EF40. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35531. 1794 S-23 R4+ PCGS graded XF45+. Frosty medium brown with four puffs of reddish brown toning on the obverse, and each of the reddish areas contains a tiny speck of verdigris or crud that is visible only under magnification. The rest of the planchet is choice and the reverse is close to flawless. The only contact mark is a very light rim bruise under the 9. LDS, Breen state V, with all the obverse die cracks described by Breen. The obverse is clearly bisected by a rather strong crack that has created a shelf in the field before the neck; the plain of the field under the chin is higher than the plain around the pole. The obverse die clearly was prepared for retirement. Graded VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census. Bland says VF35 and tied for CC#3 as well. Our grade is VF35+ sharpness net VF30+. One of the finer pieces is impounded in the ANS Collection, so there is only a single finer S-23 cent available to collectors (the Holmes example, our sale 9/6/2009:38, that brought $106,375). 1794 S-24 R1 PCGS graded XF45, CAC Approved. The "Apple Cheek" variety, so called because of the puffed out cheek on Ms. Liberty. Very attractive glossy medium brown. The surfaces are smooth and this cent has great eye appeal. No spots or stains, only minor contact marks. The notable marks are a small tick on the truncation over the 4 and a very light rim bruise at TE in STATES. In addition there is a curved struck-through line (caused by a piece of wire or thread on the die) that arcs from the dentils at RT through the hair to the bottom of the cap (as struck), but this line does not catch your eye. MDS, Breen state IV, with light die cracks on the obverse and minor swelling in the middle of the reverse, but before any die rust. The surfaces are smooth except for a bit of extremely faint roughness around ERICA to the denominator. No verdigris. The notable marks are some hairline scratches lost in the toning on the portrait, a rim nick or planchet chip off the right top of the Y, and a small flake near the rim below the right edge of the fraction. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a single set of die clashmarks. The dies were axially misaligned (the die faces were not perfectly parallel) causing minor weakness in the dentils before the portrait and the opposing legend at ERICA to the fraction. The notable marks are several small planchet flakes or pits in the field before the end of the nose, a flake on the leg of the R in LIBERTY, and a small dig on the of the right foot of the first A in AMERICA. LDS, Breen state VII, with strong die cracks on the reverse and obvious swelling on the C in CENT. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Sharply struck showing very little wear on the highest points of the devices. The surfaces are smooth but there are a half dozen specks of greenish verdigris on the chin, lips, and in the field to the right. Although these specks are quite small they do catch your eye. Otherwise this cent is beautiful. Frosty luster covers the fields and protected areas on the reverse giving that side mint state eye appeal. The roughness is strongest under the bust but there is no verdigris and no contact marks. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state I, with strong die clashmarks at the upper junction of the cap and hair. 1794 S-32 R2 PCGS graded XF45+, CAC Approved. Glossy medium brown and light olive blended with a faint hint of reddish brown on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth except for a hint of extremely faint granularity in the fields at the top of the reverse, and you need a strong glass to see any of it. The only mark, and it is quite faint, is a fine diagonal hairline over the numerator of the fraction. LDS, Breen state V, with a bold die crack through the first S in STATES to the O in ONE, and the left half of the upper part of that S is filled with a tiny cud break. Numerous sets of die clashmarks (6?) show on the reverse and there is a cud break in the dentils above LI in LIBERTY. A nice example of a neat die state. Graded VF25 net VF20 and tied for CC#18 in the Noyes census, his photo #37236. Our grade is VF30. The attribution and Husak provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1794 S-33 R6 PCGS Fine Detail Environmental Damage. Rather glossy dark olive brown with lighter brown and tan toning on the devices, a classic "two-tone" cent. Minor roughness covers all but the highpoints but there is no verdigris. The notable marks are a rim bruise below the 94, a smaller one off the end of the pole, and another at D-S. The date and legends are clear except for ONE CENT, which has been obliterated by the severe die failure that accounts for the rarity of this die paring. M-LDS, Breen state V, with six radial die breaks on the reverse (the so-called "Wheelspoke" breaks) and heavy swelling inside the wreath. The reverse die failed spectacularly creating one of the great rarities among the numbered Sheldon die varieties. Called VF20 net G6 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #25040. 1794 S-34 R5+ PCGS VF Detail Environmental Damage. Olive brown and steel. The highpoints display a bit of gloss but the remainder of the planchet is covered with uniform fine granularity. No verdigris and the only contact mark is a tiny diagonal tick high on the cheek. The date and legends are complete and easily readable. Very rare terminal die state, Breen state IV, with a large cud break connecting the cap to the rim above in addition to the earlier small rim cud above the L in LIBERTY. 1794 S-35 R5 PCGS graded VF25. Glossy medium chocolate brown. The reverse is not as glossy as the obverse thanks to extremely faint granularity in the fields and protected areas on that side. The only significant marks are a couple dull scratches in the field before the portrait, and they are visible to the unaided eye. No verdigris, and the only other contact marks are a half dozen very fine scratches on the reverse, mostly at the top of the wreath, and a light rim bruise at the second A in AMERICA. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with several prominent die cracks on the obverse and the reverse rotated 30 degrees clockwise. In spite of the flaws this cent offers excellent eye appeal, and it comes with a very impressive history. This is the discovery coin for the die variety, that being accomplished by Edouard Frossard while he was cataloging the collection of George Merritt in 1878. Both sides are plated in the 1879 Frossard Monograph, and the obverse is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference on the cents of 1794 and in the 1979 Tom Morley reference on grading 1794 cents by die variety (this cent represents the VF20 grade). When William Hays owned the coin he marked the edge two times in white paint with "H53" to identify this cent as the Maris-53 die variety, but some of that marking has flaked away over the decades. Graded VF30 net F15 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #30767. Bland says VF30 net VF20 and CC#7. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net F15+. The only notable marks are a thin diagonal nick below the eye, a tiny rim bruise under the bust tip, another over the M in AMERICA, and a final rim bruise over the second A in AMERICA. None of these contact marks is significant or at all distracting. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state I late, with a faint die crack joining the tops of the E & D in UNITED but no additional die cracks on the reverse and no clashmarks on either side. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are a small dig or planchet flake nestled between the two lumps in the field below the cap and a pair of very light rim bruises under the date. The reverse is absolutely flawless. LDS, Breen state V, with a relatively strong die crack through the top of the cap, a strong radial crack from the rim through the D in UNITED to the leaf below where it fades away, and another strong radial crack from the rim through the left edge of the N in UNITED to the leaf below. 1794 S-42 R4 PCGS graded AU55, CAC Approved. Superb glossy medium brown with smooth, nearly flawless surfaces. There is just a light touch of friction on the highest points of the devices and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. No spots or stains, and the only marks are a few trivial ticks on the neck, one more in the field off the bottom of the chin, and some tiny planchet chips in the fields (as struck). The reverse is about as flawless as you could ever expect for a lightly used 1794 cent. EDS, Breen state I, without any die clashmarks. Graded AU50 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20370. Bland says AU50 and CC#2 as well. Our grade is EF45+, close to AU50. The edge is neatly marked in off-white ink with "HALL" and "46" to document ownership by Dr. Thomas Hall over a century ago. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference on the cents of 1794, and the obverse is plated on page 18 of the 1979 Tom Morley reference on 1794 cents to illustrate the EF45 grade for the variety. Previous claims that this is the Breen plate coin are incorrect. This beautiful cent comes with a superb provenance that includes some of the most prominent names in large cent collecting history. One of these splashes is on the neck, and within this splash are a half dozen very tiny specks of greenish verdigris (visible only under magnification). Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the notable marks are a small, light rim bruise under the 79 and a slightly stronger one at D in UNITED plus a few other minor marks of no significance. The reverse is very attractive, nearly choice. LDS, Breen state III, with a fine die crack passing through the tops of NITE in addition to the earlier die cracks on the reverse. 1794 S-50 R5+ PCGS XF Detail Rim Damage. Superb glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth, the color is unimprovable, and this cent has spectacular eye appeal--until you see the rim dent at the bottom of the reverse. Otherwise the only marks are a small planchet flake at the dentils left of the lowest curl (as struck), and a minor rim bruise at IC in AMERICA. LDS, Breen state III (a die state called Extremely Rare by Breen) with a die crack from the 4 to the bust, pole, and into the field beyond. The surfaces have been lightly smoothed and there are a few areas of minor roughness remaining in protected places. A spot of fine reddish corrosion at the curl left of the date and some tiny pits along the dentil tips at the bottom of the reverse can help identify this cent. 1794 S-53 R6 PCGS Fine Detail Damage. Glossy olive brown and medium chocolate with a half dozen small puffs of slightly darker chocolate brown toning on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and free of verdigris, but there are some contact marks including a half dozen rim bruises. Most of the rim bruises are quite minor; the stronger rim marks are over ITE in UNITED and CA in AMERICA. The rim bruises do not affect the legends, only the dentils. Otherwise the only marks are a few trivial ticks, none notable. EDS, Breen state I. Both dies are uncracked, as always on this variety. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Graded F15 sharpness net VG8 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #27860. Bland says F15 net VG10 and tied for CC#8 in the Breen/Bland census. Our grade is F15 sharpness net VG10. This is the discovery coin for the variety, the discovery being made when the M. A. Brown sale was cataloged for the April 1897 auction conducted by the Chapman brothers. A lightly worn cent that was unevenly struck, which is typical for the variety, with significant weakness at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse. No corrosion or notable contact marks, but there are numerous tiny chips or planchet imperfections on both sides, and some of the chips on the neck have been lightly smoothed. A collection of microscopic chips or pits off the end of the left stem can help identify this cent. 1794 S-56 R3 PCGS graded XF40. The so-called "Office Boy Reverse" variety due to the rather haphazard placement of the letters in the reverse legends. Frosty chocolate brown and olive with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. Darker steel toning shows on some of the highpoints on the reverse. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are numerous tiny planchet chips on both sides. The strike was a bit uneven, which is typical for the variety, with relative weakness at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse. UNI and the denominator are quite weak while the date and most of the legends are strong. A pair of small chips in the field off the lower lip can help identify this cent. EDS, Breen state I. The repunching at the bottom of the A in STATES is clear and the die clashmarks are light. Our grade is VF25. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1794 S-60 R3 PCGS graded AU53. Very glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are so smooth and glossy that it is possible this cent was lightly waxed long ago. No spots, stains, or verdigris. The only notable mark is a minor rim bruise under the fraction. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with a light die crack from the dentils to the curl left of the date. In addition the reverse is rotated 35 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The reverse of this cent is plated in the 1910 Elder-Gilbert reference on the cents of 1794 (which was an update of the earlier 1893 Frossard-Hays reference). "H-23" is neatly written on the edge in yellow ink two times (this is the Maris-23 die variety). Graded VF30 and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, his photo #59292. Our grade is VF35. The surfaces are smooth and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only notable mark is a light diagonal nick in the field off the middle curls. The reverse is flawless. 1794 S-64 R5- No Fraction Bar PCGS graded VF25. Glossy medium olive brown and steel blending to chocolate brown in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this is outstanding for the grade. The only notable mark is a dull diagonal nick in the field below the cap. LDS, Breen state V, with a strong die crack through the D in UNITED into the center of the reverse plus a fine radial die crack from the dentils to the right top of the M in AMERICA. Half of the inside of the D is filled with an internal cud break and the area inside the wreath is badly swollen causing most of ONE CENT to be unreadable. Otherwise the date and legends are strong.
