Lot 1392
France. Magnificent Second Empire Malachite Centerpiece. This most impressive centerpiece, 21" long by 14" high, dating from aproximately the 1850s-1860s French Empire of Napoleon III, has been carved from a solid piece of malachite (a carbonate of copper) with applied embellishment in gilt bronze, these being swans with wings in display at each end as well as natural foliage forms throughout the body and base. Excellent condition, though a skillful cleaning will greatly enhance the brilliance of the gilding and the rich green color of the stone, which according to legend possesses myriad metaphysical and healing properties.
Malachite has been used for decorative purposes since ancient times. In Russia, the Malachite Room of the Winter Palace designed by the architect Alexander Briullov in the late 1830s was used as an official drawing-room of Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna, wife of Nicholas I. This magnificent room is now a highlight of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.
