Lot 2787
Important Judaic Ceramic Lamp with Menorah Motifs. Arab-Byzantine Era Palestine, c. 7th-9th century. Rare and noteworthy. So-called "slipper" lamp, for its shape, is molded in two pieces in a red-orange terra cotta. The underside of the lamp plain, the shoulders ornamented, a plain trough-like channel connects the wick and filling holes. As typical of this class, the decorative motifs are symmetrically placed: towards the nozzel, a long palm branch; at the knob handle a small tree or branch. Flanking these on either side are two menorahs, plus rectangular grids, suggesting walls or panels. The lamp virtually pristine, with thin, cleanable calcerous patina. Length: 3-1/2".
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Usually in this class of lamps, menorah-like motifs are found but are very crude, and can with equal likelihood depict tree or floral subjects, rather than the menorahs as some attest them to be. On the above lamp, however, the menorahs are clear and explicit. In fact, two varieties are shown. One, the normal type with six arms flanking the central arm, is as expected. However, the second, without a doubt shows eight arms and is thus a Hannukah lamp! Taken overall, the motifs around the lamp's shoulders can be considered an emblematic representation of a synagogue or temple. And so, an important object of early Judaica.

Lot 4877
Judaean Lamps, c. 50-700 AD. Lengths: 3" - 5". The classic artifact from Judaea. Lamps conjure up images of the daily and personal doings of the peoples of antiquity. They are also, allegorically, a symbol of the people of the Book. Here we find four types spanning the ages and the fortunes of Judaea. The earliest, the Southern type, with red slip and sharply molded petal ornament. Later, a handled lamp with enigmatic tree symbol which may have served as a mnemonic symbol of the menorah in the age of the diasporah. The two remaining date to the times of Jerusalem's Christian and Islamic regimes. All nicely preserved, with soot stains on the nozzels showing use.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

This coin is extremely rare, and particularly desirable as the centering is excellent, as is the boldness of strike. It seems likely that this type served more as a special issue of some sort rather than a coin seen in daily transactions. During the Second Temple period, depictions of these, the most sacred vessels within the Temple, were prohibited.

Lot 4957
1958-2005, Complete Collection of Israel's Silver & Copper-Nickel Commemorative Coins, Proof. A total of 131 proof coins in all series: Independence Day, Hanukka, Purim, Pidyon Haben, Sites in the Holy Land, Flora and Fauna from the Song of Songs, Judaic Art, Biblical Art, and Special Issues. As Israel Sedaka, Deputy Director of the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corp., wrote in 1995: "(Israel's commemorative coins) serve as goodwill ambassadors of the State of Israel and its people to all corners of the world. They will remain for thousands of years and retain meaning for future generations, just as the ancient coins minted by our people beginning 2,700 years ago continue to evoke historic memories and emotions." Most of these are choice brilliant proofs, while some are toned, and a few have been affected by PVC because they were stored in soft plastic government holders for long periods. Includes the "key" 1963 Seafarer Independence Day Commemorative (4,500 minted), and many coins with mintages under 1,000, issued in recent years. Unfortunately the 1958 Menorah coin has been polished and cannot be called a proof. A remarkable collection that tells the story of the Jewish people. Proof.
