Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 96

Lot 952

1884. PCGS graded MS-65+. CAC. A nice white coin with reflective fields. Only 4,400 struck during a period when new coinage demands fell to almost nothing. This was the result of the Civil War, where nearly all the available silver and gold coins were hoarded, while that war was financed by the North with "greenbacks", those paper dollars were used instead of coins for transactions. The paper value fell relative to gold and silver coins, and this crisis was not solved until 1879 when the paper dollar finally came back in line with the silver and gold coins, so the hoards were finally spent, crushing the demand for new coins. Pop 1; 27 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6366) Estimate Value $4,200 - 4,500

Realized $5,758
