Lot 350

1796 S-117 R5+ Draped Bust VG8. Sharpness VF20 but the surfaces are covered with fine to moderate roughness, and there are a few small spots of greenish verdigris at the dentils over the second A in AMERICA. A half dozen small, shallow pinpricks show in the right obverse field and a short hairline scratch extends through the base of Y in LIBERTY. Rather glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with splashes of reddish light chocolate brown on both sides. The date and legends are all bold. Great detail but not very attractive. Nonetheless this was the best example of the variety in the famous Holmes collection. MDS, Breen state III. A fine die crack extends through the tops of RTY. Estimate Value $500 - UP
