Lot 270

1794 S-35 R5 G6+. Slightly sharper, especially on the obverse, but the planchet is covered with uniform extremely faint granularity under slightly glossy medium chocolate brown toning. The devices are a lighter shade of steel brown giving the cent a two-tone appearance that accents the details. No verdigris and the only notable contact mark is a dull nick or planchet chip under the right foot of the R in LIBERTY. Both sides show extremely faint hairlines that are visible only under strong magnification, strongest in the field before the portrait. Not perfect but the date is strong and the legends are easily readable. Extremely rare EDS, Breen state I, with an uncracked obverse that has no clashmarks. Graded VG8 net G6 and tied for CC#23 for the variety in the Noyes census, his photo #35226. This is the finest example known to us with an uncracked obverse and it should be a prize for a die state specialist. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
Ex Robert A. Matthews (who acquired it unattributed in Daytona, FL, 4/1984), Superior 5/28/1989:166-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., 1997 EAC Sale, lot 105-Chuck Heck Collection (includes the Holmes collection envelope and both lot tickets).
