Lot 240

1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 VG10. Sharpness F15 but there is fine porosity scattered across the top of the obverse and microscopic porosity scattered over the reverse. No verdigris, and the notable contact marks are a rim bruise at the D in UNITED and a lighter one over TE in STATES. Glossy chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the devices. Possibly recolored but the toning is attractive and the eye appeal is decent in spite of the imperfect surfaces. MDS, Breen state III. The dies have been lapped and the right end of the wreath ribbon is fragmented, but there is no bulge in the field under the cap. The date and legends are complete and clear. The reverse of this cent is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference "The Varieties of the United States Cents of the Year 1794" to illustrate the Hays reverse 3-4. In addition "H-52" is written in white paint two times on the edge to document the Hays provenance and Maris-52 die variety. A nice cent that comes with an important provenance. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
