Domitian. Gold Aureus (7.52 g), AD 81-96. Rome, AD 90/1. DOMITIANVS AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Domitian right. Reverse: GERMANICVS COS XV, Minerva standing left, holding spear. RIC 698; BN 162; BMC 173; Calicó 839. Well struck with mint luster still present. A few faint scratches in the right obverse field. Choice Very Fine. Estimate Value $4,000 - 5,000
Minerva, who is depicted on the reverse, was the favored deity of Domitian. He reportedly maintained a personal shrine of the goddess in his bedroom and is known to have founded a legion, Legio I Minervia in her honor. His reign also saw her depiction on the coinage in three types in addition to the one employed for this aureus.
