Lot 168

1798 S-163 R4- Style I Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded F15. Dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are a bit dull but to describe it as granular would do this cent a disservice. No verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks. A tiny nick in the middle of the upright of the T in LIBERTY and a tiny diagonal nick over the left top of the 7 are good identifying marks. Rare TDS, Breen state VII, with a cud break connecting the 17 to the rim and extending left to below the lowest curl. A decent example of this very rare die state; better than the Noyes plate coin for the late die state in his 1991 reference. The finest of the die state in his census grades net VG8, so there isn't much from which to choose (Noyes hasn't graded this example). Our grade is F12+ net VG10. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Heritage 1/13/2011:3051.
