Lot 166

1798 S-160 R3+ Style I Hair, Small 8 PCGS Genuine, AU Details Scratch. Lightly cleaned and nicely retoned frosty medium chocolate brown and darker steel. There is no trace of corrosion or verdigris and just a touch of friction on the highpoints, but there is a very dull scratch on the forelock under the T in LIBERTY and a similar short scratch in the field left of the lower curls. MDS, Breen state III, showing sharp die clashmarks between the bust and dentils. Both sides show tiny low spots mixed with die rust, mostly in the central areas. Low spots and die clogs seem to be quite common on this variety and the rarity of nice examples is badly understated in this cataloger's opinion. Graded EF45 net VF30 and CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #26427. Bland says EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#5. Our grade is EF45+ sharpness net VF35. The attribution and Newcomb-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
