Alexander I - Oval, gold-backed Brooch. 34.5 x 21 mm. By William Tassie. Pointed oval with a glazed center, white glass-paste portrait of Alexander I r. against a blue background. Border set with matched paste crystals. Brooch-pin setting and small suspension ring. Perhaps made as a memorial item. A handsome piece and in Excellent condition. Estimate $4,000UP Catherine the Great was a great patron of James Tassie, ordering thousands of copies of classical carved gemstones after those in British public and private collections. These were delivered between 1783 and 1788 in specially-made cabinets, accompanied by a five-volume handwritten catalog. When James’ nephew inherited the business, he continued to deal with the Russian court and his work would have been well known to Alexander I.
