Lot 576

Superior Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Scarab in a 24 Kt. Gold Ring. Extremely fine Egyptian scarab fashioned of lapis lazuli. Scarab dates to the Late Dynastic Period, circa 664-332 B.C.E. Scarab set in a 24 kt. gold ring by Constantine and Xenia of Athens, Greece, circa 1979. Size: 5. Weight: 20.4 g (gold only). Regarded as a reflection of the all-embracing night sky, lapis lazuli was the most valued of all semi-precious stones among the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptian word of lapis, in fact, came to be used as a synonym for "joy." Perhaps, then, it is fair to judge this extraordinary piece a "joy" to wear. $7,500 - 10,000
Scarab Ex: Christie's, London, Antiquities, November 17, 1975, Lot 475, part ("The property of a gentleman").
