Roman Bronze Panther Head Ornament with Silver Inlay. Bronze head of a panther with silver detail to eyes. Ears are back and mouth is open to reveal sharp teeth. Intricately incised work depicts the growth of fur around the neck, before the ears, and over the eyes. Naturalistic depiction of tension in the facial musculature, particularly around the eyes, plausibly conveys the ferocity of this creature. Probably originally a decorative metal feature to a larger object. Beautiful green and brown patina to the surface. Circa 1st-2nd century C.E. Length: 56 mm. Width: 54 mm.
