1864 Indian Head 1C. Copper-Nickel PCGS AU53. PCGS graded AU-53. CAC. Mostly brown and a tougher date to find nice like this than commonly known. 1864 saw the transition away from using nickel as an alloy in the copper cents and in late 1864 the adopted cent alloy was French bronze, basically all copper of 95 percent with a 5 percent tin alloy. Prior compostion used for this 1864 Copper nickel cent was 88 percent copper with 12 percent nickel. Nickel as an alloy would continue in use by the Philadelphia Mint in the Three Cent nickel coins and soon to be launched "nickel" five cent coins of the Shield design in 1866 (PCGS # 2070) Estimated Value $140 - 150
