Lot 486

1803 S-247 R3 Mumps Obverse PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Damage. Recolored dark steel and olive brown with lighter brown in protected areas. The only marks are a dozen shallow pits scattered over the lower half of the obverse, the largest one near the dentils before the end of the nose. No verdigris or notable contact marks. What makes this cent special is the die state. It is earlier than Breen state I, before any clashmarks on either side. Normally you can identify this variety by the strong arc of clashed dentils through the denominator; not so simple with this one. Our grade is VF30 sharpness net F15. Certainly not the most attractive cent in this sale, but significant nonetheless. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimated Value $200-UP

Ex Fred Lochary-Tom Reynolds Collection.
