Lot 1669

Justinian I. Gold Solidus (4.40 g), 527-565 EF. Constantinople, 545-565. D N IVSTINI-ANVS PP AVI, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justinian I facing, holding globus cruciger and shield. Reverse: VICTORI-A AVCCC, angel standing facing, holding staff surmounted by staurogram and globus cruciger; in right field, star; IB//CONOB. DOC 278 (Carthage); MIBE 7; SB 140. Brilliant luster. Extremely Fine.
Bellinger thought the IB was the indictional year 12, and therefore placed this issue at Carthage. However, the style is clearly Constantinopolitan. The significance of the IB - if we conclude that it does not represent the indictional date - then becomes enigmatic. It is clearly too high of a number to represent an officina. Estimated Value $400 - 500

From the Aurora Family Collection.
