1840-O $2.50 Liberty NGC AU55. NGC graded AU-55. Nice even gold toning on both sides with slightly deeper gold hues on the uppermost devices. Only 33,580 struck and from that meager beginning a scant 125 or so are known today. The strike is decent, although the left thigh of the eagle shows moderate striking softness, common to this issue. This is one of the finer examples technically, as most fall into the XF-40 to AU-55 range. Finer pieces quickly become prohibitive for most collectors to pursue, especially in any Mint State grade.
