Obama, Barack (August 4, 1961 -). 44th President of the United States. Born and raised in Hawaii, for college Obama enrolled first at Occidental College in Los Angeles for his freshman and sophomore years, and then at Columbia University in New York City. He read deeply and widely about political and international affairs, graduating from Columbia with a political science major in 1983. After working a year in NYC for a business consulting firm, in 1985 he answered an ad placed by Jerry Kellman, a widely admired New York activist who was trying to help laid-off factory workers on the far South Side of Chicago after a succession of shuttering of steel mills. In spite of Obama's youth (only 24) he was hired to address the concerns of the virtually all black areas of Altgeld Gardens and Roseland, allowing him his first immersion into the African American community he had longed to both understand and belong to. An alliance of churches launched the Developing Communities Project which he would head in addressing the issues of the communities.

It was at this time Barack Obama wrote his brother, Roy (Abon'go Malik Obama), and wife, Mary, apologizing for not staying better in touch due to the difficulty and time required by the job. "I'm responsible for organizing an about 250,000 person community where unemployment is high and hope is low. My inexperience is showing but I hope that by the end of this year I will have a very good perspective on the possibilities and limits of this type of work." He closes with the presumption and hope that Roy and Mary's jobs are going well in D.C. and hopes to hear back from them soon "Love - Barack." Obama indeed was able to successfully organize civic issues such as the development of parks, after-school programs, adult training centers, and notably the removal of asbestos from some of the area's oldest housing projects. But he concluded that, faced with a complex city bureaucracy, he could prove far more effective with a law degree, and in 1988, Obama enrolled at Harvard Law School.

A rare, remarkable snapshot, handwritten and signed by the future President of the United States. In his mid- twenties, at the crossroads of a brilliant political career, he admits to the challenges of public service while demonstrating his sense of humanity, hope and possibility. His characteristic optimism, evidenced here, ultimately inspired a city, a nation, and the world. Estimated Value $5,000-UP
