Strong, George Templeton (Edited by Nevins, Allan and Thomas, Milton Halsey). The Diary of George Templeton Strong (Four Volumes, Complete Set). George Templeton Strong (1820-1875) authored an astonishing personal account of life in the 19th Century, especially during the events of the American Civil War. Strong's 2250-page diary was discovered in 1930. Beginning at the age of fifteen, Strong wrote almost every day of his life for nearly forty year, his first entry recorded on October 5, 1835 delivering an astonishing first hand chronicle with excerpts used in Ken Burns' acclaimed documentary "The Civil War" and Ric Burns' "New York: A Documentary. A four volume set was edited and published in 1952, The Macmillan Co., New York. Volume One, Young Man In New York 1835-1849, 391 pp; Volume Two, The Turbulent Fifties 1850-1859, 517 pp; Volume Three, The Civil War 1860-1865, 641 pp; Volume Four, Post War Years 1865-1875, 603 pp. Pictoral slipcase and mylar book covers have protected these volumes and blue boards. Appear never to have never been read, they are in superior condition with ultra-clean pages and solid bindings. Slipcase displays wear, toning, chipping and some splitting but very much did its job in protecting these volumes with all four remaining in superior condition. Estimated Value $500 - 700
