Sibelius, Jan (1865-1957). Finnish composer and violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern periods widely recognized as his country's greatest composer. Typed letter signed ("Jan Sibelius"), 1 page, 8¼ x 5¾", bifoloium, Järvenpää, Finland, February 24, 1950. To Cyril Clemens, Esq., President of the International Mark Twain Society. Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope and a sepia tone photograph of the aging composer. During the unproductive period in the formerly prolific composer's later life known as the "Silence of Järvenpää," Sibelius sharply responds to a request that he provide a short definition of music: "…long ago I made a firm decision never to produce anything but music and I have made no exceptions to this rule."
