Lot 166

1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair G4. Several points sharper but covered with very fine roughness, and there are a couple dozen shallow pits scattered over the reverse. No contact marks, only a few specks of greenish verdigris. Rather glossy chocolate brown with lighter chocolate toning on the devices. LDS, Breen state III, with obvious swelling at TES-OF-A. Double struck with a small offset between impressions, perhaps 1 millimeter at most. The first strike was centered on the planchet and the second was shifted slightly to K-10.5. The doubling is visible on both sides, clearest in the dentils and under the date where the bottom of the first 8 is visible below the second 8. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Estimated Value $300-UP

Ex Tom Reynolds-Ed Miller Collection.
