[Track and Field]. Champion Track and Field Cigarette Cards. A set of Hassan/Mecca Cigarette Cards from the "Champion Athlete and Prize Fighter Series," featuring track and field and swimming champions, each measuring 2¼ x 2½". The collection of 60 cards is beautifully matted and framed into two pieces, the first 29 x 31" and the second 31 x 32". Matted under each card is a photocopy of its verso. Although not examined out of frame, the cards appear to be in fine condition.
Issued around 1911, these cards salute the achievements of some of the most popular swimmers and track stars of the age. The nicely rendered portraits and occasionally quaint biographies reveal the world of early 20th century sport. Included are cards from several Olympians, most notably Johnny Hayes, the first American gold medalist in the marathon.
