Hirschfeld, Al (b. 1903). Legendary American caricaturist known for his sketches of Hollywood notables as seen in the New York Times. At the age of 17, Hirschfeld began working as the art director of Selznick Studios. He traveled to Europe to study art, returning in 1925. After the New York Herald reproduced one of his charicatures, Hirschfeld gained popularity and began a longstanding relationship with the New York Times. After the birth of his daughter Nina, he began to incorporate the lines of her name in each sketch, a game newspaper readers picked up on, becoming a precursor to the likes of "Where's Waldo".

Signatures. Lot of two signed Time Magazine covers. Al Hirschfeld's work is in the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Gallery and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (along with many other venues). Mr. Hirschfeld has signed two Time Magazine covers, one featuring his portrait of Mario Cuomo and one featuring his portrait of Jay Leno. Both covers have been matted to an overall size of 11 x 14" and are in very good condition.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.
