Letter Dated 1783, Wilkes County, Georgia Colony Regarding Indians, Treaty. Autographed letter signed written August, 1783 from James and Mary Whiteside from Wilkes County, Georgia to his brother, John Whiteside of Mecklengburg Co., North Carolina. Letter measures 12½" x 8" marginal chipping to left side, toning and some stains. He reports on his fine crops but more importantly: "…The Indians keep coming in and stealing horses. It is expected that there will be no treaty this year…." The letter continues: :…Most of our county is settled with Baptists and what few Methodists, we can have preaching any time." Located in east central Georgia, Wilkes County was created in 1777 and named for John Wilkes, a member of the British Parliament who opposed some of the British policies that eventually led to the American Revolution. The county is historically known for the Battle of Kettle Creek, a decisive conflict of the war where British forces were solidly defeated.
