Silver Filigree Spice Box, Russia, Dated 1863. Filigree from top to bottom, with wide door, four legs, and original pennant atop. Stamped with maker's initials over 1863, and Kokoshnik Mark (head facing right and 84). This type is described in "Towers of Spice," published by the Israel Museum: "Other spice boxes kept their architectural connection and remained realistic towers in form, but were done in abstract ornamental patterns and designs. Spice boxes entirely in filigree are known from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly from Eastern Europe. 29.7 x 8cm. Excellent condition.
