Lot 351

Orlinski, A.A. Destruction of the Droits de l'Homme. Poland's Anna and Andy Orlinski are known the world over for their historic maritime paintings boasting astounding detail and an uncanny ability to convey the thunder of battle at sea. After the spirited bidding of two large Orlinski paintings in our last auction, we are pleased to offer two slightly smaller examples of their work. In this lot, the fury of the seas and the calamity of cannonball fire is represented in the ultimate destruction of the Droits de l'Homme (Rights of Man) a Téméraire class, 74-gun ship of the French Navy during the French Revolution. After being engaged for nearly 13 hours by the HMS Indefatigable on January 13, 1797 and thereafter, with no masts or rudders, the Droits de l'Homme ran aground, resulting in 250 drowning and over 60 crewmen dying due to lack of food and water after 5 days of stormy seas. Rescue finally came by nearby villagers with Captain Raymond Lacrosse the last to leave the destroyed ship. Original oil on canvas measures 12" x 16" handsomely framed to 20" x 24" in gilt wood frame. Once again, the mesmerizing details of the ships, the ocean and the fire of battle coming roaring through in this compelling piece.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
