Orlinski, A. A. The Lapwing Capturing a French Frigate and Sinking a Brig. Poland's Anna and Andy Orlinski are known the world over for their historic maritime paintings boasting astounding detail and an uncanny ability to convey the thunder of battle at sea. After the spirited bidding of two large Orlinski paintings in our last auction, we are pleased to offer two slightly smaller examples of their work. On 25 November 1796, Captain R. Barton and Lapwing were at St Kitts when an express boat brought the news that a French force consisting of two warships, several smaller ships, and 400 troops, were threatening Anguilla. Lapwing was able to meet the French force near St Martin's. There she was able to capture the frigate, Décius, and destroy the brig, Vaillante. Offered here is a galvanizing interpretation of this conflagration with the Isles of Scilly visible in the background. The drama of engagement on the seas nicely rendered but it's the detail of the ships, the wind in the sales and the fire and smoke that inspire. Original oil on canvas 12" x 16" framed to 20" x 24".
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
