Lot 346

Levy, William Auerbach. Torah - The Law. William Auerbach-Levy (1889 - 1964) was born William Auerbach in Brest-Litovsk, Russia. His parents adopted the surname of Levy after their arrival in the United States when William Auerbach was about five years old. Auerbach-Levy gained notoriety both as the preeminent caricaturist of his time and as a fine and established painter and etcher. Offered is a vintage original etching, a very early work in his storied career, of a rabbi studying the Torah, signed in plate, and again hand signed and titled by artist in lower right corner and bottom border. Etching measures 10" x 7" and is tipped on its original card stock backing during its original framing. While the backing shows staining and is brittle, the etching itself, save for the most minor of age toning remains in excellent condition, the signature very strong.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.
