Gold and red foil rune stamping on the spine and cover. With a green leatherette slip case, featuring a Tolkien illustration. Green endpapers. 317 pp. The text printed in black with green accents. Beautifully illustrated throughout by the author; including five full page color illustrations,Thror's map and a map of Wilderland. Tolkien's description for the first original edition written in 1937: "If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler…" A most enticing and inviting trip indeed. Tolkien's modern classic was the source for the highly popular film trilogy "The Hobbit" directed by Peter Jackson. Fine.
