Goldman, Emma (1869-1940) Anarchist born in present-day Lithuania; known for her political activism, writing, and speeches. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century. Typed letter signed, 1 page, 11 x 8½ in., on Mother Earth Publishing Association stationery, New York, May 29, 1916. To Horace Traubel regarding the Woman's Federation Club conference dinner and a meeting she'd like him to attend. Goldman writes: "…We have called a meeting at Russell Hurts' place…to start a determined anti-military campaign. Giovannitti and a number of others you know, together with myself, have gotten up a manifesto which is to be signed by all the real revolutionists, and of course, we count you among them…" Goldman was deported to Russia in December 1919 under the Anarchist Exclusion Act, which had been expanded in 1918 to include any non-citizens who could be identified as advocates of anarchy or revolution.
