Lot 1264

1890, $1 Coin Note. PCGS Gem New 65. Fr-347. KL-55. This is a lovely Gem example, which has been off the market for more than 30 years, last appeared on a Lyn Knight fixed price list in 1984. Like many high grade large size notes sold during this era just a few decades ago, it was likely flattened to "improve" its appearance--it was commonplace at the time for many dealers to believe that notes were more saleable if they were neatly flattened with squared off corners and none of the "paper wave" that often accompanies more original notes. While the market has shifted its demands towards originality in recent years, notes like this are still beautiful, they are still uncirculated, and they are still very desirable. "Flat Gems" will typically sell for a small discount versus their original counterparts, and they represent an opportunity for those "old-time" collectors for whom technical grading modifiers are not as important.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Realized $6,463
