Lot 1119

1880-O. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice white gem that offers a sharp strike and exceptional surfaces. There were over 5 million of these struck at New Orleans in 1880, but gems are notoriously rare. To date PCGS has certified a total 35 at this grade level and importantly only four finer (three as MS-65+, the finest at MS-66). However, in Choice MS-63 this issue is rather plentiful. Clearly these were shipped about in canvas bags and suffered heavy jostling long before they were released in order for so few gems to be known today. This date is a huge challenge for collectors who are seeking MS-65 or finer grades for their Morgan dollar sets, as these are so infrequently offered. Furthermore finding a frosty white coin is always tough as so many of the nicer examples have spent decades in albums and allowed to tone. This prize will certainly come at a strong and well deserved price (PCGS # 7114) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.
