Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 87

Lot 1105

1879. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely blue and golden toning that is particularly rich and intense, expecially on the reverse. Only 1,541 struck in this proof only year, as circulation strikes were last issued in 1878. Proof coinage continued for collectors until 1883, then just a few were coined after that under somewhat irregular circumstances as these were not generally available to collectors when dated 1884 or 1885. These large and impressive coins have always been highly collectible, especially when found at the gem level. Notice how clean and attractive the surfaces are! And too, the colors must be enjoyed everytime this coin is examined. Pop 36; 26 finer, 21 in 66, 5 in 67. (PCGS # 7059) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

Realized $7,344
